KEEPING THE HOME FIRES BURNING mas : m4 tmm m • ■ Here is a little bit of home which may be found In any A rmy Y. M. C. A. building in the Southern Department. The big open fireplace, the curtained windows, the cozy cornmi and the little feminine touches which have been added by friends of thè TT,* all contribute to the comfort and morale of the soldier away from home. Here the soldier w-111 find a happy substitute for the home fireside, with music if he prefers it—the home paper—good magazines—a game of check ers with his cliura, and a lot of o.ther things that help to make life Interesting | tor the soldier. This Is the social room which may be found In nearly every | Army Y. M. C. C. A. co-operate in their plan to encourage good reading among soldiers. This is a corner of a Y. M. C. A. building in the Southern Department utilized as a library for the soldiers. "Foxy Grandpa" behind the counter is popular with the men, and each of the five hundred books In the little library are passed out on aa average of twice each month. "Foxy Grandpa" has another responsibility. He presents a new khaki-covered new Testament to every soldier who asks (or It, and a surprisingly large number of the men request the little book. In fact, most of the soldiers have made it a part of their equipment They are furnished free by the Army Y. M.C.A. SENDING THE "CIVIES" HOME MÊ « • : Many a kid brother is sporting his soldier brother's Sunday silk shirts and best serge suits these days, and brother doesn't mind, because he is wearing the very latest style for men—khaki of the regulation military cut. The Army Y. M. C. A. helps the rookie soldier with his civilian clothes problem. "Y" furnishes wrapping paper, and a "Y" man is on hand to help with the wrapping, furnishes the twine, and assists with tiie addresslag of I uie bundles of "etvibs" (military parlance for civilian clothes).
