The following is an account by Mr. Philip Burns, '. tree soil gentleman, who was tho cause of it: The question of slavery had often been publicly debated by •> iibem and .Southern students previous to Sunday, Noveni „.r ii, without causing ill feeling on either side, but on that uv. at the president’s request. Mr. Philip Burns chose for the , ,1,,'eet of a sermon “The Great Principle of Liberty," and nl- I i. il to West India emancipation. The excitement became i.U osp. and a tremendous stamping and hissing, it is alleged, i, made to silence him. Then about one third of the audi n-c rushed out with loud cries and imprecations- Stones r. re hurled against the house, and it was proposed to conduct C Burns to Buffalo creek, hard by. and baptize him in the >xme of the “peculiar institution." MW'ii.i.K Railroad Depot in Ruins.—On Saturday oven :u i»«t, between the hours of seven and eight o'clock, the ubre roof to the Richmond and Danville Railroad Depot, a this city gave way from the great weight of snow upon it, ml falling in crushed out the brick walls, makiug a complete wreck of the whole building. Thodopot was 22."> feet long on i.it> west side, 210 feet on the east side, and lHS feet wide, aud '.••ing covered in by one roof, supported only by small iron r>d«,presented a wide surface for the falling Snow, which had accumulated to a depth of several Inches before the accident wurred. Fortunately no one was in the building at the time, lailuo lives were, therefore, lost. This depot was erected at a v’St of #25,000 to tbe company, about two years since and was one of the largest In the South. When the roof gave way. he North gable end was thrown out with such a force that the '•eight of the bricks burst through the South wall of Mr. Archibald Thomas’ factory, which was injured to the amount of nreral hundred dollars. It is impossible to estimate the loss of he company, and to the merchants and farmers who had freight | a the depot, but we fear it will fall but little short of $.’>0,000. i* there were in the building, at the time of the occurrence, j mo 15,000 bushels of wheat, besides hogsheads and cozes of barco, lots of guano and merchandize of almost every char* i tor. There were also two or three freight cars crushed by tie falling timbers, and one of them liternlly crushed into frag nouts, Soon after the accident occurred, one of the young inon cm ■loved at tho depot made his way through the mins to the up freight” dork's office and secured the books. If the snow • removed at once from off the freight, as wo suppose it will j be. much loss will be avoided. Had the accident occurred in tho day. instead of at night, the ! of life would have been frightful, os a number of men aro ■nstantly engaged in receiving and delivering freight during i tininess hours. Tunnel.—Col. Crozct, in a letter to the Charlottesville Jeffersonian, says the whole perforation at the tunnel is 3,GO 1 feet, viz . 1^30 on tho West side, and 1771 on the Fast. This makes, for the year, 749 feet, which, however, is a proper criterion for the future progress, as about one month should be deducted In consequence of a turnout of long duration. Since that time, that is, in seven months, there lias ’'•’en excavated 492 feet, being a little over 70 feet per month. 1 here remains on this day t372 feet A LYNCHBURGER abroad.—1The following extract is from an Oregon paper : “Our little village presents a most bustling appearance with the volunteer* encamped in the grove. [These terms have been already published.] Russia makes known in Nesselrode's circular her unwillingness to treat for the neutralization of the Black Sea. hut it is expected she will ab solutely refuse the cession of the territory re quired to keep open the Danube. Appearances strongly indirale that Austria will not take the field against Russia unlessas tun ed of the active support of the German Hand. Advices from Sweden are very warlike. The military commanders have received instructions to have their regiments in the highest state of efficiency before Spring. The indications are, that ill accordance with the secret article of the treaty, Sweden will take the fieid in the Spring. GortachakoA announces that on the lfithoc December a detachment of Cossacks defeated a strong squadron of General Vivian’s cavalry, near Kersch, and that the English commander was taken prisoner. The latest accounts from the Crimea stale that the Russian troops had been reinf irced by two regiments of huzzars—also, that large bod ies of Russian troops were marching from the C rimea to Bessarabia. There was no intention however, of evacuating their former position, ns their places will be filled from the reserves. L<i:vnoiiB'i mroad cast Omajn AN1I_ ^ OITANO BOWER.—We confidently recommend this Jfa chine to farmers. Hsvtng but little machinery, it la durable and easily kept in order, and sows regularly any quantity Grain or Guano desired. Frank Ruffin* Esq., Editor of Southern Planter, thus comments on It i “We are so perfectly convinced of Its great value In effiela* working capacity, cheapness, durability and simplicity of con struction, that we do not hesitate to recommend it to the pubUa —a thing which it Is known we do not ofton venture upon.— Again, one horse works the machine with perefect ease. II sows a breadth of ten feet as fast as a horse can walk, and carrying two bushels at a time, does not require as many stop pages as are necessary by a man who seeds by hand. Thf Seeding, too, is entirely independent of the wind, and wM done. with us as well during vary high winds, which prevailed most, of the time, as during a calm, because the seed aaa delivered so close to the ground. We not only recommend the ms china, therefore, to every farmer, bnt we urge tiros* to buy It, not am Mr. Seymour's account, who is nothing to ns, bnt their own. TH08. BRANCH A SONS.
