Wii'l Ail • .1 i . Ax r'AAliO. A Sr.xJMTlov—Our attention has lieen directed to a grievance. wh’-h we think can Ik* very cttiilv remedied. We allude t» the want of order nml uuuingeinent i i sealing j avengers in the roaches of the two train" depart in * from the lVj»ot in this eitv. As soon n- the train arrive, the gentlemen passengers make f ir the departing trunis, which alter reaching they »l»n»\v their cloaks or oven* >uts <»r whatever they may choose to u«e for the pur p »sr* mi the "Cits, and thtr secure the m »"t eligi ble phi *es in the very coaches which are intended for the nc s.mm • Inti m ot ladies and* bundles.— When tin* p*t"Snui r« i**lii'n from the Kitting House nil the go id -eats are taken.and gentlemen who are traveling with la lies nitist do the Is**: tl.ov cun: hi many in*t>i*ees are subjected to the annoyance and inconvenience of being aepa ated from in •so they have in charge. The mhv to remedy this abuse would he to have a person al ways ut hand nt the proper time, whose duty it hhail be to properly seat Indies, and other parties traveling in company. The door** *1 the two hinder couches should be kept locked till within a a short time of the trains starting, and then all confusion and difficulty in procuring seats would be in*** I. Tho course indicated above, is the one pursued at. the IVpots of most well regulated mads, and we can see no reason why it might not lx* fol lowed here with like favorable results. Puffing—Si me of our advertising mends nave complained that we do not pay sufficient atten tion to tlicir favors in our editorial columns—-in other words, do not puff them to the extent thov d*»«ire. To all such .grumblers we desire to mi dress a few practical words, which we hope they will receive in the same kind spirit hy which they are dictated. In the first place we desire all such persons to understand that wo are not simple enoughto view the advertisements sent this pa per. as a compliment to its publisher; hut as in tended to serve the pecuniary interest of the par- 1 ty advertising. We are, at all times, happy to receive the paying advertisements of the dealers 1 of our city, as well as those of other places, and we ! believe, in a large majority of instances, they re ceive much greater benefit from advertisements than inures to the publisher. Such lieing our belief, we, of course, feel under no obligation to give extraordinary notice in oureditorinl columns to mutters of this sort. Most people suppose that the public must have a great interest in their pri vate concerns, and seem to believe that newspa per folks have nothing to do hut to be constantly saying good things of them aud tludr wares; whereas we set it down as a fact, that there is nothing which a professional writer is called up on to do, which he so utterly detests, as puffing. Editors of newspapers are engaged for special business, and it is no part of their duty to waste precious time in obey ing the importunities of per sons for notices tending to advance tho private in terests of the applicants. When we cliosc to fa vor a friend in this regard, it is our mvn matter, 1 and concerns nobody else. If we feel incline 1 to write a half column out of feelings of pure philanthropy, the public are not in the least <le- I gree affected, and we only add an item to the debt 1 due editors, the catalogue of which, is already a thousan! times 1 ng*'r than the Atlantic cable. In what we have Wiitten. we hope to have used language not susceptible of misconstruction.— Oar advertising columns arc always at the service of the public, for a consideration—our editorial columns are not for hire, at any price. Arc we understood ? Acquitted.—Mr. Houston Rucker of this city, ! who was charged with shooting Albert C. Ihillm . of Kirhniotid on Tuesday last, bad his trial bef* re the Mayor of that city oil Friday and was acquitted. Mr. James Sternf-tt. an aged man, who is en tirely deprived of sight, has recently ha l issued from the press, at this office, a republication of a little work by Rev. John llcrsey, on Eanti*m.— On tho profits of this little hook die is entirely de pendent f*r a support, and we. therefore, commend him to the sympathies of our citizeus. Lynchburg College, Oct. 6th.. 1858. M ssrs. Editors:—In regard to the article winch ! appeared in the local e diimii of your paper oil the j 26th of September virtually accusing the Faculty j of this institution of “suppressing them" and ) purporting to come from “The Members” of the j two Literary Societies. Several Members. i Horse Thief ('aught.—On Friday la*»t a young limn was arrested in this county for stcalingii here from r Mr. Williams, of Augusta county, and lodged in jail ill this place. He had stolen the horse on Thursday ami the same night started to this place, where he arrived at about .‘1 o'clock and put up at the Exchange Hotel. Alter taking breakfast the next morning at the Exchange he called upon several gentlemen and < Acred the horse for $80 aud finally sold him to a gentleman of this place at that price; but before lie got pos session of the money, one gentleman told him he thought he had seen the horse a few days before, at a house in Augusta; and after some further oonversation, the guilty man broke fur the woods, and iu the meantime the owner cutne in pursuit of the missing horse, when our efficient town ser geant gave chase to the thief, overhauled him, and lodged him in our jail.— Isx. Star. Another Railroad Hetision.—In the Circuit Court of Redford county, Ya., last w eek in the ' case of Steptoo ri. the Virginia and Tennes«eo Railroad Company, where the plaintiff sued for ' damage# sustained In him from the trespass of | cattle on liin wheat field, through the neglect of j defendants to keep the cattle guards on their road j in repairs; the Judge decided that the company | was neither obliged to construct the cattle guards nor keep them in repair. Notwithstanding the ; instructions of the Court, the jury brought in a I verdict for the plaintiff for $120, which verdict j was set aside as contrary to the instructions from j the bench. Painful Accident.—Wo regret to learn that a young man hy the inline of James Smith, who had neon residing with Wm. It. Harvey Esq., in the lower ond of this county, came to his death by ihe firing of a shot gun one day last week. Young ( Smith had gone to the woods to shoot pigeons, i mi l at the first shot the breech of the gun was ; blown out of the barrel striking the young man , in the forehead, inflicting a severe wound and j probably fracturing the skull. We learn that he 1 survived sum A twenty four hours, when death re- j lieved him from his sufferings.—Fincastle If hi;/, t MARRIED, On Tuosdav morninj' the nth October, bv Rev. Mr. Smith, ,\lr.
