For Eoino timo tho oflicial of

made themselves especially odious
by an insolence of ofllco nnd utter

tho cPyand county. Tbo people
were satisliod that they were the
prey cf these wolves, and that in
vestigation ihtoofiieinl corruption

term of tho Court Judgo Brown
drove from tho grand Jury panel

est men. Tho Chancery nnd Cir

gery hiio other crimes, together
with ex-Clerk Cardozo, now tho
Superintendent of Ildiication. The
Sheriff had failed to give bond ns
required by law, nnd tho Board of
Supervisors, who tiro bin tnols,
con stan t ly re fused t o do t hoi r d u t y

sufiicicnt bond. As custodian of
tho Court House, ho was waited
upon and urged to uso nil vigilance
to seeuro the books and papers of
tho various otlloes ; to tako charge
of tlio keys of tho building, and
permit no one to enter it ai night.
This be promised, and yet u night
or two after tho Court House was
forcibly entered, and tho records
that Would havo established the
guilt of tho rascally officials' wero
stolen. Of tho Sheriff's compli-
city in this crime there is no shad
ow of doubt. Tho peoplo saw
that forbearance toward these
men w as simply an encouragement
to further crimes. A public meet
lug was called, to which enmo the
bisl and most solid men of tho
city and couufv. Besolutions de
claring:! number of t!!kials guilty
oi cl inics and misdemeanors were
adopted, nnd a committee appoint

was then placed in chargo of the

and Captain Flanagan uppointod
to the care of the Conrt House
