Borne of our exchanges say that Messrs. Gordon and Lamar did harm by airing their eloquence In time they claim a Democratic vic tory in that State. This reasoning looks a little illogical. At any rate we think the press Is doing them an injustice. They visited New Hampshire at the invitation of prominent Democrats of that State. We have no doubt Messrs. Gordon and Lamar accomplished good by tbeir visit. Of course the radicals attempted to neutralize their ef forts, but as long as we gained one Congressman, we see no reason to complain. Vicksburg Monitor. This Is a fair criticism on the in v dlous comments that have been made ou Messrs. Lamar & Gordon's visit to New Hampshire. It is rea sonable to suppose that the Demo cratic Executive Committee of New Hampshire were better posted as to the requirements of their cause than newspaper writers more than thousand miles away. And it seems that the committee did not err in their calculation of the good that would result from the speeches of these distinguished statesmen and orators of the South. Unfor tunately for our cause they reached the State only two days before the election. Now mark what follow ed. It is related by a Now Hamp shire correspondent of the Philadel phia Times (Independent) : " The election returns show that wherever Generals Gordon and Lamar spoke the Democrats made unprecedented gains. Bo it seems that the New England mind is not to be Influenced by appeals to their passions so much as by arguments addressed to their understanding." Of thesespeeches the Springfield Republican, a very influential Lib eral Republican paper, says that they made votes for the Demo cratic candidates is probable; and it argues that they did a high er work In removing false impres sions which had been made on the Northern mind by political parti sans who live on tho sectional agl tation which Is kept up at the ex pense of the South. - The effect produced ou the elec tion by their speeches is thus de scribed by the Washington City Herald (Democratic) : "If the sincere and eloquent words of these honest and earnest men pleading for peace and good will between the sections could have betn listened to by every vo ter in the Granite State, the result must have been, we firmly believe, an overwhelming conservative tri umph. In the District where their addresses were made a Deinoeratie Congressman was chosen, although it has hitherto been represented by a Republican." This simple announcement of the practical efiect of the visit of our distinguished Southern Represent atives speaks its own eloquent vln dication of tbeir addresses and of the wisdom and generous lusplra tlon of the committee under whose auspices they were delivered. Take Care of the laments. From tho Cincinnati Commercial, The President, that is, U. 8 Grant, appointed Honorable D. P. Lowe, ex member of Congress from Kansas, to the important po sition of Commissioner of Pen sions. mat appointment was withdrawn, and tho snuio gcutle man nominated as Chief Justice of Utah, which nomination has been confirmed by tho Senate Chief Justice Lowe was formerly a Cincinnatian, and Judge of our Police Court, Therefore tho bos- oms of all true Cinciunatlaus will swell with pride because Lowe is Chief Justice. It in very proper that this swelling should take place, and we do not desire to seo it go down iu any measurable de gree. Therefore it is that we ap pend the stationery account of Hon. P. P. Is It Beeaose They Do Xot Dare! The pfosceution furnUhsd the tragedy; the defence is now put tiug iu the comedy. At present they have a young and pretty sou brctte on the boards, who simpers and gossips in a style that would drive a French maid mad with envy, aud narrates with unaffected delight the conquests she made of her libidinous master and his at tempts to ruiu her. But one month of fun is too much, and tho people arc slightly weary of it. It is time we had souicthiug mom dramatic. There is a probability of the play bciug spoiled by spinning the thread too flue. Tho public's nerves hare been composed, and it wants to be startled again. Whv not, therefore, produce the other great actor, Mr. Becchrr himself ? There is a danger that this person, who Is slightly inter ested in the issue, may bo lost sight of altogether iu following Tilton on his lecture tours, in his mid night forage ou his parlor pictures and his ludicrous search for soft conches in the early hours of the morning. We ore finding out everything about everybody except Bccclier. His counsel aud witnesses seem to have adopted the shrewd trick of the younger Wcllcr, who, when the Judge asked him If he saw his father, looked straight up to the coiling and replied that he did not. So, in this case, tho defendant's lawyers are calling everybody's attention to Theodore Tilton, and keepiug Henry Ward Bccchcr in tho dim back ground. Why not put him ou the witness stand ? Is it because they do not dare ? Beveral passengers on the lower Mississippi were attracted by the alligators basking In the sunshine. "Are they amphibious, Captain ?" asked a looker on. "Amphibious, thunder I" answered the enthiisl astlc officer, "they'll eat a hog a minute." "Herbert," said a perplexed mo ther, "why Is it that you're not a better boy ? "Well," said the lit tle fellow, soberly, looking up Into her face with his honest blue eyes, "I suppose the real reason Is that I don't want to be 1" We think the child gave the real reason why all of us, big as well as little, arc not better than we are. The charge that Botkln, of the Milwaukee Sentinel, has to pull on his undershirt from below on ac count of the slue of bis ears, Is a base invention. We've known Bot. over twenty-one years, have slept with him a great many times, and we know that ids ears are flexible. In cold weather we used to uso the off otio for au extra quilt.
