VOL. 4 ISISSILCHCF DISTRESS l Under the above caption wo char acterise and publish the following: To the Fcop'e nfashin;toa Co. The undersigned members of the Grand Jury selected by the Board I of Supenisor of your county, to' serve at the April term, 1875, of the Circuit Court, deeming it une uot only to vou but totmreeives to explain tho events which were taken as pretext by the Hon. C. C. Slmckleford, for "dismissing the said Grand Jury this 12th day of April, 1875, and of ordering anoth er Graud Jury to be summoned in our stead, beg to submit tho fol lowing statements: Iiefore the Slier ill' called the roll of the members from tho 1st Super visor's district, W. II. Trigg.Ksq., called the attention of tho Court to the fact that tho iiamo of Wade Hampton, jr., from said 1st district had not been called, and upon this beiug done, the Sheriff stated that lie had not called the names from Hint district. aud-lhcreuiiou called the names, and said Hampton, upon being called, took his "place. When tho name of McrrA-" r Hams was called, a statement Was made to tha Court, that said Wil liams was a Levee Inspector nnd desired tobeexcused, but that Mr. W. W. Worthinsrton was present in court, and would servo in his stead. The Court - then excused the said Wiliams and directed the Sheriff to summons a person in his stead, I litrt n pon the Shcritf summoned the said W. W.Wor thlugton who was duly sworn as to his qiialincntlous, and lliorupon a hallengo was mudo to the array by W. It. TriL'sf. E0.." upon the grounds that the said Wade Hamp ton, lr., bail not been summoned and that tho said W. W. Worth- ington was a imbsitutc and there upon tho court answered that lu regard to tho the latter tho facts were not as stated by counsel and not in accordance with the records, and directed tho Clerk to have the records show distinctly that tho said V. W.Worthlugton had been summoned by tho SherriiT. And thecourt moreover stated that Ihesald 4Vado Hampton, jr., had becti selected by the Board of Su pervisors as a member of the Grand Jury, and whether sum moned or not was presuut in court and a member ot the Jury: and thereupon tho court charged the Jury and they retired to their room and they continued in session from day to day, until they adjourned ou'Saturday tlio 10th iiist., to meet at 0 o'clock a. m. on Monday tho 12th lust. Before the court mot on tho 12th tho rumor was preva lent and had como to tho ears of some of the Grand Jury that the Judge intended to dismiss the jury and have another summoned in its place. When tho court met and as soon as the Grand Jury had met in their room we were summoned in tho presence of tho court and there dissmlsscd. The court assigned as a reason therefore thai the said Wailu IJumplouJr., had not been summoned and that the said W. W. Wort Illusion was a subsituto. TIicpc facts, us tar as above stated, can bo substantiated by the orig inal records made at the time, as well as by all present in court. Believing that the rights of tho commuutiy have been trampled upon, and one of the safo-gaurds of liberty broken down by tho arbi trary action of the court In the premises, and that you have a right to know tho pretext offered for depriving you of tho Gi;uid Jury selected by your represent atives, we respectfully submit tho foregoing statement for your con sideration. Wade Hampton, Jr., b.G.rrciwh. Georgo V. ward, , Moses Bully, Calvin Harrison, Alex. Waters, Ira Bundly, Adam Metealf, Augustine Chew, II. 11. Harvey. At tho time of tho summary and unprecedented dismibsal of this Grand Jury, it was engaged in a thorough investigation of , tho frauds and criminal violations of law pertaining to certain couutyof flcials: and was destluod to mater terlally assist the recovery of the large amounts of money held by the several tax collectors, from the state and county revenues for which civil suits have been in stituted. This joiued with tho fact that it was a body of men. composed of Bomo of the best cit izens of the couuty, caused its de liberations to be ' most eagerly watched by taxpayers and all good citizens of all classes. Naturally this cutting short, at that time of its labors, produeced an intense feeling of indignation by this class of the community: suceodod how ever by a feeling of deeper depres sion aud hopelcssnes than we ever before observed: Admitting, for the sake of argument that, the Judge's reosou for objecting to Messrs. Worthlng ton and Hampton was sufficient, the. Jury was complete without these two members: but argument Is idle on this occasion. If. as has been intimated, there were other reasons for ttio ttis charge of the Grand " Jury, it is unfortunate they were not staioa, Another Graud Jury has been summoned: though gravo doubts exist as to its legality. GREENVILLE, -WASHINGTON CO., Frccccdinssof aTntllc Sleeting. In pursuance to a call for a meeting of the eitizeus of the town and county, to take into consider ation the conduct of the Hon. C. C. Snack, erord in di.niissin ' Grand Jury, a meeting wi the as held in Alexanders Hall, April 13th 1875.. On motion a committee of five were appointed to draft Resolu tions, to express the sense of the meeting, the committee adopted tho following resolutions, which were adopted without disscussion. AVhereaa the Hon. C. O Shack leford hat seen tit, in his wUdom, as Chief Executive of the Judicary ofthic district, to discharge the Graud Jury. Be itresoivcd, that in vJew of his known 'character for sterling honesty and iutegrity, his charac ter above reproach, and iu tho ub sccoof any information or proof as to his culpable intention in dis charging said Grand Jury, and in view of tho fact that he should be better ablo to judge of the premis es than nuy other, either for the prosicutiou or defence. Beit re solved, that his action is endorsed, and wo pledge 'our coulideuce aud respect untill it can be shown that he noted with unworthy motives or without authority of law. Bo it further resolved, that we believe it tp bo tho duty of all good citizens to sustain the dignity of our courts, until biicIi tlmo ns the courts shall fail lu the performance of the sacred duties entrusted to their charge. (signed.) : . : . . ' Stuart White, . , N. B. Johnson, ' . J.D.Webster, J. J, Lcngsfleld, Wm. Gray, Ch'n. Oh motion it was ordered that a copy of said RcBolntions bo pre sented to the Hon. Judge Shackle ford and also a copy bo furnished to the press for publicatou. Ou motion the mooting abjonucd. We deem it proper and essential to accompany tho foregoing with a statement of the origin of this mooting. It was originally pro cured by proniluont Radical Lead ers, with the avowed purpose of passing resolutions of "indigna tion," on account of the dismissal by Judgo Shacklcford, of tho Washington county Grand Jury: and through this object command ed the attendance of many who de sired to participate with them in expressing disapprobation nt this extarordinary action of the Judge: but it was distinctly perceptible when the meeting had assembled that it had been "captured," per haps gotten up with this end in view: at all events the " indigna tion," simmered: oozed away as did Bob Acres' courage: honco tho melancholy farce attending this so called, " Indignation, " meeting: which excited the very deep die gust of the respectable body of cit iznus attending tho meeting with sincere motives. Lottslana Affairs. ' Opposition to adjustment devel oped to ifs fullest extent bright and early Monday morning. Au- toine and ltuusacker are the lea ders, with Pinchback working un derhand, and the present oflicors of the House joined lu. Their chief object is to retain their po sitions, - .Vigors and Roxbcrry, tho Clerk and Assistant Clerk, pronounced loudly against any understanding with tho Conservatives. Antotue is still riticent, but knowu to be a bitter opponent. Stamps remains true to the orig inal agreement, and appears to ex ercise great Influence for good. In the Senate but little trouble is apprehended. Some objections have ben urged to the unseating of Crozicr, but tho issue is not regard ed as vitaly important. . Hcriwig it is thought will stand for adjustment, his demands hav ing beeu com plod with by Kellogg on Saturday evuing. A careful review of tho political situation developcs an excicited state of affairs, but with apporau- ccs indicating tho overthrow of Pinch and his entire crowd.
