Washington, May 3 The "Loun ger ou the Avenue" has tnis to EdV of the Liinars: "It was the custom iii tli e family of the Lamar to name the sou for those who la their lives and death bad been the most eminent exemplars of the love of human freedom and their owu people. So the orator at Charleston was named for a bero who died to save Borne, bis city, and his Soman kin. He was a thluker from his youth. The Insti tution of slavery he looked at with the eyes of a philosopher. Given to the South originally by ITew England merchauns, whose enter prise led them into what they ea phonfouslr called 'the Guinea trade,' the climate and conditions of the States below the thirty uiuth parallel fostered it and it grew in to the uii"hty power it was. I have often thought what a senna tion could be made in ISoston, if a list of those merchants who mado the fortune their blue blooded de v ecendauts enjoy out of the slave trade were printed." "I think I will do it myself one of these days, for the fact is capa ble of absolute di-monstration. Slave labor became the depend ence of the hardy white man lu opening the new maluriul lands on Southern rivers to healthful culti vation. But the divine origin of the "institution," which was first demonstrated by a New England clergyman called to a Southeru pulpit, who thought thus to please his tlock, was never believed by ' any of the Lamars. Mr. Lamar ; favored the secession of the State because he belived in the broadest bninan rights. The Sumner epi sode grew out of this same ten dency. When Charles Sumner, the apostlo of freedom, dieb ,the country was astonished to read, among his most earnest eulogists, the words of a Stute Itighti Hum ocrut and Confederate Lieutenant . Colonel, the close personal friend ami upon occasion, the vigorous defender of the President of the Southern Confederacy. As I said above, tho Lnnmrs hoveevor possessed tho conrago of their convictions: and they are not slow to eny wbnt they believe. I need scarcely observe that Mr. Sumner was not a popular figure in Mississippi, nor was an oration so eulogistic of his purity of pur pose and character ns was thut of the then Representative in con gress of the Second Mississippi district calculated to incroase the orator's popularity. This did not affect Mr. Lumar in the least. His speech is history, and the prophets in tho North anions tho ltepubll can journals who prcdiotod that 'that oration had killed Lnmnr,' were rendered dumb when at the next election, iu a time of unpnr alluled excitement, the distinguish cd gentleman was ro-uominuted by acclamation; and elected by the largest majority he ever has re eelved. "No man knows Mississippi or Southern temperament and charuc tcr better than Mr. Lumar. He feels that he can depend upon tho instinctive love of justice that is inherent in his constituents, iind that their Judgment will be unbi nscd and just. With thut knowl edge as a certainty, be says aud does precisely what he believes to be right, and whether it is a eulogy on Sumner, a defense of Mr. Joffor son Davis on the floor of the Sen nte'orofMr. Calhoun, bo is always listened to with respect, and his honesty of purpose unchallenged uj. 33::ia ?icifs Eaii7 Cerpa. l,JJ JiivUUm ) On tnd tftrr SunUny, April 3A, train m ill run u fullowi : Train So. 1 Wave Greenville dully at 4:00 p. m. The followinir from the Daily Clarion, published nt Meridiun, Mies., Jane 8, 1801, will be read with interest by the admirers of Scnntor Walthall of to-diiv. The Southern Motive gives the following story of Oeiicrai E. C. Walthall: When the war broko out ho was District Attorney for Choctaw district, Mississippi, and when the Yulobu&ha Rifles were organized he was elected captain. When the l.'th Mississippi was orcan- ized he was elected lieutenant colonel of that regiment. At the battle of Wild Cat he showed great bravery and coolness. He commanded the loth Mississippi at the ever memorable battle of Fishing Creek, aud his bearing upon that battle field excited the admiration of every one. He was everywhere, urging on his men. At one time, it is said, thinking that his men were firing into a Confederate regiment, he raised the fingand rode to within about c'xty yards of the enemy, when they said to him, 'Tuke down that d d thing.' The missiles of death were flying thick aud fust, and bis clothes riddled with bullets, he turned to his men with a beaming mile on his countenance and saiii, 'That'n Ihe crowd wo nro after forward, buys!'
