Toombs returned to the city from Washington last Monday. He reports his son, who has had typhoid fever, now out of danger. This was no doubt good news to his many friends in the city. Several of the stores have their Hol iday goods on display. From those we've seen we judge that this year the merchants will exhibit the prettiest line of Holiday goods ever seen in the city. The out-of-town trade will do well to come here, and purchase their goods where a choice selection can be had. The spread of smallpox in our city, we think, la now ended. The existing disease prevails largely among the col ored people, while several white fami lies have the disease among them. Monday's rain drove every one in but the bill collector, but he could be seen with his little brown book under his arm I whistling to himself this merry song: "You've bought our goods, 'taint' no use; so pay me the money, don't' want no excuse, ,' The second of December was surely one of the most delightful, even for this most . pleasant of climates, that one could wish for. On every side, In every direction, would be met strolling parties, some seeking pleasure in buggy driving, others horse-back riding, and a number free from the slight chill incumbent to those driving, were out for a 8unday afternoon walk. While, as a usual thing, the river-front holds the attention of the sightseer, there were quite a number of prominent visitors at the waterworks; viewing the new work and improvements being done tnere. The blaze at the Newman hotel on Tuesday morning, which destroyed a table-cover and the paper on the cell ing, was caused by the Igniting of va por from a gasoline heater. The flames were soon extinguished and lunch was announced for the merry firemen, Mr. Max Lemler and Joe Sil- verstein, who distinguished themselves on this occasion, Mr. Lemler alone con trolling and playing on the Are with the one-inch hose and Mr. Silverstein, whose level head caused him to use the tahld-nloth as a fire extineuisher. Both will be awarded a medal for bravery by the city. H (Continued on 8th Page.) JJ D La yuiSllitlLlLi mjjM.
