Kettle is well known all through this section of country as a first rate mechanic, ami one of our best citi zens; and wo rejoice to see him planting his useful resouiceson such an enduring basis. »ngs can cs ican SO To the Public. I desire to return my sincere thanks ■ to the generous people who assisted me at the fire on Thursday in saveing my furniture and other articles of value, and hereby tender one and all, my obliga tions on the occasion. C. W. Kosminsky. Long before 10 o'clock on Thursday the town was alive with people, someof whom never come unless tiio show is ben to 11 ng them out. The light had hard ly broke through the silver gates of tin east when the tramp of ttie multitude be gun. It is a big show, and it is not only a time to see the varmints that prowl about the jungles of Asia and Africa, but it is a time to study human nature, and we never forget that part of thepic-nic. Goodbar & Co., of Memphis, Tenn., have not only a local, but a general rep utation as being the best merchants in their line of goods to be found in the South-West. Not only have they the best and most stylish outfit of shoes and boots, but they have the most useful and substantial foot protection known civilized lands, from tiny outfit of the child, to the interminable extremities of the giant. These goods they place upon the market at the lowest prices, because they were bought to be, and must be sold at the most reduced prices. They call the attention of merchants and deal ers to their large and inexhaustible stock. On Thursday morning abou with the town full of people show, the alarm of fire was given, which was soon seen to proceed from the kitch en of Mr. Kosmineky, one of the new houses erected about a year ago by Mr. W. C. Chamberlin. The fire soon com municated to the main dwelling, which it carried away, together with another house on the north side of equal value and built at the same time by Mr. C. Mr. 0. J. Nance was the occupant of the second house, and had recently moved in. We are glad to note, that both these worthy citizens saved nearly all their furniture. As both of them bad recently established themselves comfortably for domestic comfort as well as business, they have the warmest sympathiesof the entire community. For some time the Episcopal church and rectory were in imminent danger, as a change of the wind towards the east, wouldsurely have biought them within the grasp of the greedy flames. The school house, own ed by'Mr. J. J, Gage, was on fire several times, but it was speedily put out. If his school furnitue is worth any thing after being thrown out, it is a wonder to us. For an hour or two there was deepest fear that several other buildings would fall before the devouring element. But brave men stood on the roofs, and watch ed every spark that fell. An engine of ordinary capacity might have saved two neat and substantial dwellings, and two worthy families much trouble. 111 o'clock to see the Branum A Goodwin are now in their new, stylish and convenient quarters, one door south of Griffis' corner, where they are better than ever prepared to sell drugs, medicines and everything in their line on the most accommodating terms. Everything in their new house looks as though it had passed under the refiners' art, even down to the compound of physic which Shakspeare says "throw to the dogs." But we have a better use for it in these days of aches and pains. Besides that, there is nothing kept in a first class drug store that you cannot get of the best quality, and done up in the best style. Besides all this, you will deal with gen tlemen, whose passport is more in the heart, than in their clothes, and they have plenty of these latter. Thomas Bros., have removed into their splendid new quarters, on the south side of the square, known as the Gerard building, where they opened one of the largest and most complete apartments of staple and fancy groceries ever offered lo the people of Grenada and surround ing counties. Their supplies of sugars, coffees, teas, syrups and molasses em brace the best oi these several house hold necessities which they are selling at the most reduced prices. Their stock of pork and bacon, embracing sides, shoul ders and hams, incomplete. In the mat ter of canned goods, they have any va riety of fruit and vegetable known to the trade, and ask oi buyers, the privilege of showing and pricing their goods. The North Mississippi conference of the Methodist Church, has been in ses sion for several days during the past week, and adjourned after the usual rou tine of business. Rev. T. Y. Ramsey, jr. lias been returned to tliiH place as Pastor in charge, and Rev. S. .51 Thames has been placed in this district as presiding Elder. In the return of Mr. Ramsey, the wishes of the Church here over which he has so ably and effectually presided, have been consulted, and the communi ty may be congratulated on having this devoted Christian minister once more a mongst them. Mr. Thames, is known for his devotion to the cause of religion and the proserity ofthe Methodist church. The death of Col. T. 51. Hardeman which occurred at Winona on the 2nd, will be received with evidences of sorrow by a wide circle of friends all througli this county, In the long ago, be was one of our most useful and energetic cit izens, and his death make* another gap between the living of three-score and ten. and the younger, who are now wrestling with the realities of life. With many warm personal friends in this county, his decease will lie remem bered with tributes of affection and ven eration. Peace totheashesof a brave good man. We are very glad to say, that some evil and damageing reports in reference to Mr Bernhart, a stranger, who sue ceeds 5Ir, Charlie Steiile in the butchering business, have been ex ploded as false, by an exhausting en quiry into all the facts by Mr. Francis Wright, our excellent Deputy Marshal. Mr. Wright has recorded his affidavit exhonorating 5Ir, B., with any intent or fact to impose upon the public, meat not reliable, and not properly butchered "Be just and fear not," is our purpose, out in reference to all whom it involves. S. H. Barrett A Co.'s circus and me nagerie, spread their tents here on Thursday, both in the evening and at night. Their dens of animals were good, the circus, in their acrobatic performan ces were first rate, but in their riding and other evidences of the showmans' skill, were not above an average. At the evening performance, the crowd was good, but at night, owing to the rain, there were not many present. Thous ands of negroes traveled twenty miles to see the street pageant, as they had no money to pay their way in, left for home with bits of meat, candy and cakes. It is no wonder that people feel like eating at Sirs. Loewensteins, when they have so many savory odors steaming up of fish, flesh and foul. Besides them, which is really necessary for human sus tenance, site can, in a few minutes, pre pare that which is good enough for an Epicure. Her new and ample range in her kitchen, can boil, stew and bake any thing that enters into the compounds of bread and meat, from the richest dain ties to the most useful aliments. Try her and test her oysters, fried, stewed raw and done up into pies, and the many other good things which she can place before the man of labor, or of elegant leisure. For pure liquors oi wine, whisky, bran dy and alcohol, call on Branum A Good win, they have the best in town, which they propose to sell at lowest prices. Now is a good time for insuring prop erty, aseveryday convinces us of the good sense of this necessary safe guard and Mr. R. P. Lake is the gentleman to do this business. Dr. Jackson's Root and Herb Cordial lis the best blood purifier in the world, price $1 00 Sold by Branum & Goodwin. V Col. Ltltre'i Uln-Honse Burned. It is a painful communication which we make, of the burning of Col. J. D. LeFlore's gin-house on last Tuesday eve ening, with about twenty-five bales of cotton, and no insurance. This was one of the finest gin-houses in the State, and belonged to one of the best men in the commonwealth. The conflagration was incidental and not the work of design. This is a time when none of our best men even, have anything to lose, and our sympathies naturally go out for those who could use their advantages for the benefit of others, aB Col. L., has ever done. Bodenheimer &Co., are now in their new house, known as Handy corner, in the old but substantial house of J. C. Stokes. With a large and well selected stock of fancy and staple goods, hats, boots, and shoes with the best and most stylish clothing, with staple and fancy dry goods, they are ready to face the pub lic both in quality and quantity of their new stock. Besides, they have all the groceries used in this section of country, both by the rich and the poor, and are now offering to the public of all sections and financial capacities, the same at the lowest figures. They wish it known, that they invite trade and traffic to all people that come to Grenada to buy and sell, whether it be a load of cotton or a raw hide, whether it be a yard of calico or an outfit for a country store. Come and see them, and get your moneys' worth. G. G. Leonard, (col.) is now occupying one of the new houses on Green Street. He has been doing business in Grenada for several years, and has made his way to his present position, by fair dealings and active enterprise. To-day, he has a large and well selected stock of dry goods and groceries, which he isofftringat the lowest rates to buyers ^of every color, business and occupation. There is noth ing wanting in a first class house, to place G. G. Leonard as one of the com mercial factors of our town, and we cheerfully present him and his goods to those in pursuit of trade. They will find on his shelves, every staple want of the times. Lapp, Goldsmith & Co., of Louisville, Ky.,areknown all through the Mississippi Valley, as amongst the largest dealers in fine whiskies. Their hand-made Sour Mash Crow whiskey, is at once recogniz ed as the best that is made. Their stock is not only superior, but immense, large and enterprising firm, is now rep resented by 51 r. E. A. Melton, of our town, whose business qualities are known all over the State in his department of trade. He has not only the ring of the true salesman, but the genial gentleman, who off duty, can entertain with quick wit and lively humor. We cheefully pre sent principal and agent, to the good of fices of dealers everywhere. This MAKKIED. At the residence of 5Ir. Richard Rat liff, on Sunday morning, Nov. 30th, 1884, byS. A. Roberts. President Arthur has invited Grover Cleveland, President elect of the United States, to the White House as his guest during his contemplated visit to Wash ington City. President Arthur has not only introduced a good custom, but has set an example of liberality in politics that should in the future be a lex loci which none but a man too low and mean lo he President, should ever violate. In those too high-minded business func tionaries of the United States, we hope will grow up a precedent, that will ever afterward soften tlicjisperites of politics, and make its all believe, that we are as distinct as the billows of our political preferences, but we are one as tbe sea in our Nationality.
