The Cradle of the Confederacy! Montgomery fraught and filled to overflowing with historic incident and roman tic lore! Montgomery, the wholesouled and the hospitable, threw open wide her doors and gave a royal welcome to the throng of "Daugh ters of the Confederacy." From New York to New Orleans, from the Atlantic to the Pacific coast they came—these loyal and patri otic Daughters to do noble work in the cause so near each loving heart. A bright smile of wel come and a cordial hand-greeting gave every U. D. C.. as she enter ed Montgomery, the satisfied feel ing of being doubly welcome and literally "at home." Pleasant apartments had been provided, and on Wednesday morning at io o'clock, a brighter, a happier, a more brilliant assem blage of brainy representative Southern women had seldom be fore Been seen. The first meet ing of the Convention took place in the Representatives' Hall of the first Capitol of the Confeder ate States. As we approached the massive, historic old building, a feeling of reverence and awe took possession of my whole be ing. and when, upon mounting the broad stone steps my attention was arrested by a brass star, bearing this inscription: "Where stood Jefferson I>avis when inuagurated President of the C. S. A., Feb. 18, l86t," the impressiveness of the scene and surroundings became awe-inspiring beyond description. The exercises were opened by Rev. Neal Anderson, accMtrated Presbyterian divine, in an im pressive manner, reading from the BF>le used by President Da vis when taking the oath of office. H«w completely the place, the the people, the very a&xiosphcre took one back to the stormy, the soul-tstirring days of sixties. How one &:lt the very spinit of those tense, exciting times pulsating threughout one's whale being! And the thought came over and ovor again, "Thost were the times to try mens' -souls." But we had come, after Tike lapse of trctiy long, changeftil years, only in a spirit of sweet, eoftened sor row to commemorate the death less deeds of the dear departed, ar».;l to show by orr works, to fc-eth dead and living, our cease less appreciations of their valor, Jiheir victories, thecr suffering and tiheir sacrifices. Throughout fou-pj ays the U. D. C's held businesis sessions, in ■**hich great interest was manifest «<t and much maULerly eloquence 'disjuayed. . .. The principal -subjects under |<t!tscussion were the Jefferson Da jviis Monumental fctnd, the Forest Monument, the erection of a thefol-limonument to the Manassas he roes, and the amosding of the U. ]!). C. Constitution!-. Other minor matters came up, repeatedly, but ere t on unimportant for record, And it is with shame and sorrow but truth comp els the confes Ssfion—that the Montgomery Con s-ention was not rsne series of pa Jtrioticiappeals, atraii (professions of •sisterly love and faith. The "'green-eyed-monster" has crept in, even here, and it is seen with deepest humiliation and pro foundest sorrow. -O, Patriotism! how many petty evils creep in un der thy name! BuUit is a part of ny creed to overlook the short comings and to remember only the good, theenobling, the elevat ing, so let it be with the U. D. C. 01 Montgomery. All great na tions, all notable organizations, make mistakes in tS-eir infancy, and so while errors now creep in to tlhe government <£ this vast body of U. D. C., yet so doubt, in time, it will prove to be one of the -greatest and grandest, most effective of the good orders of the ages. Montgomery, socially, is South ern hospitality, pure, atnadulter ated, perfect; the same lavish, lux urious hospitality that one now hears of, but seldom sees. In the many magnificent receptions, with fkeir bounteous, splendid ap pointments, with their dazzling array o 4 beauty and chivalry, one realized the indescribable splen dor of t'hch ospitality of the Old South. "So sad, so strange, the days that are no more. At midnight, of the fourth day of the meeting, after the re-elec tion of the same officers, the se lection of the next annual meet ing place (Wilmington, N. C.), after many heartfelt well wishes and friendly good-byes the U. D. C. Convention of Nineteen Hun dred came to a close.
