The last quarter has been a hard quar ter on roads, owing to the fact of the heavy rains. I have decided after a fair trial with day labor on the roads, that it will be best to have the roads worked by contractor. My costs for maintaining, etc., the roads for last quarter is $732.46. which is approxi mately $7.32 per mile. Report of J. E. Carpenter on roads In District 2: I have carefully inspected the roads in this district—owing to the fact that we were without a contractor in this district for at least six months, the present contractor took these - roads in bad shape. I find the roads in good traveling condition, but not what I expect in the future. Owing to the fact that the contractor lias got until October 1st for the width, I recom mend payment to said contractor for 93 miles of road, i urge that the contractor in this district to drag all of the roads at the very earliest con venience, and repair all of the cul verts and abuttments to all bridges, in first-class order. That the con tractor will at once begin the width oa the roads, and make fills on all of the hills where the sinks are, as they have until October 1st for their width. I will oppose giving them any longer than the date mentioned for their width, as they will have plenty of time if they will do their duty. I urge the contractor to drain the wa ter out of the roads at every possible place, as I know that drainage is the secret of good roads. Report of L. F. Hayden on roads. District 5: I have gone over all the roads in said Beat except 2 miles west of Le flore on the road known as the Bur rows road—this road lias not been worked this quarter at all. I find the balance of the roads In good shape ex cept the width, culverts and a few washes on sides of said roads caused from recent rains. The contractors are taking lots of pains with roads in my Beat, and say they will have all roads up to specifications by October 1st. I recommend pay for 70 miles at $12.50 per mile. This day coming on to be heard the petition of J. A. Martin, et als., for change in the public road as set out in said petition; and the Board, after hearing same doth find and deter mine that said petitioners have com plied with the law. and that the own ers of the lands through which the road will run by said change being made, have signed said petition and that the right of way will be deeded to the County without cost.
