hour of severe trial, but rushed onward to

ed the preiter part of the first vear at Cum
berland Md.. and Martinsbnrg Va. Aftcrtlie
battle at Gnttrvbnrg it was transferred to the
Arrny of the Potomac and passed the winter
at Brnndy station on the Orangeand Alexan
der Bail Bond. When the campaign opened
last wrier it was ntaehed to the 'd Rrur.

The 3d Division met him at, Monocacv

forces were compelled to fall back on ac
count of the nverwhelmine number of ho
enemy. It, was on that bloody field, that
our comrade received the wound which en
ded bis earthly career. I called to see him
frequently and always found him bearing
his affliction patiently. Never murmuring
or com claiming, he trusted in that Great
Being who brought, him safely through so
many bloody engagements. He fell while
nicking up the flag afte- three color bearers
bad been shot down. It was thought for
eonic tim that by the careful nursing of bis
Father, Brother and nurses that he would
recover, but taking worse, in a few davs he
died, a'ld was buried in the honors of war.
