about threo hunilrcd yards, had emp

Btcr, and had just drawn his V'in
Chester carbine, wbeu u shot fioui
one of the InJiaud on the eiuiueaco
went through his horso'a loius mij
brought him down. Luto lost no
time In seeking a shelter in an esca
Tution among the rocks.
His dog during his fight had kept
close to his horse's heels, and now
followed him to the edge of his place
of shelter, where he took up his posis
tion and began to furiously bay tho
Indians. No amount of persuation
could induce this fait'jful animal to
come down and ebaie hit master's
shelter, but kept at his post, exposed
to a constant fire until a shot from
one of the Indians ended his guard
duty forum.
Four of tho Indians having secured I
places of shelter within about one
hundred yards ol him, kept up a preu
ty coustant fire, which was returned
by Lute for an hour or more, until
the approach of uight, when the In
dians disappeared, aud Luto, cau
tiously creeping from Ids hidin
placo, made his way homo. The
splinters of rock torn up by tho balls
striking near his head, 'considerably
lacerated his face.
The next morning an examination
of the ground was made by several
parties. The three dead horses were
found; tho trappings on none of (hem
had been disturbed, sh'jwing that the
Indians must have left hurriedly, as it
is their custom to secure these things
whenever possible. The belt men
tioned above, with pistol holster at
tached, wag also found where Lote
had reported he had seen it fail. Iu
front it was but a narrow strip of
leather, and bore the mark of the pis
tol ball which had rent it. iu twain.
Under the river bank a bloody blan
ket was found, on which the wouuded
Iudian had evidently been lying; also
several cloths and bandages saturated'
in blood. From all these signs there
can be but little doubt that the Ini
dian received a mortal wound, and
died under the bank while Lute was
being Lsld iu Lis hiding place, to pre-,
vent Lis uaing Lome and giving the
alarm. From the empty- cartridge
bulls found on the ground, it is evi-.
dent that the Indians were scpplied
with needle guns and Smith & Wes
son pistqlg.

should know )iow to treat a flesh

filaced in circumstances away from
surgical and veterinary aid, whero he
may save his own lifo, and tho lite of
a friend or a bcasl, simply by the cj-

the first place, close tlie lips of the
wound with the hand and hold their,
Gnnly together to chrck the flow of

bathe tho wound for a long time in
cold water. "Should it be painful,"
a correspondent says, take a handful
or burning coals ad sprinkle upon
them a handful of common brown
sugar, and hold the wounded part iu
the smoke. In a minute or two the
pain will b'e alluj ed, and tho recove

in my foot. The pain and nervous
irritation were severe. This was all
removed by holding it in the smjke
fifteen minutes, and I was able to re
