(Dr. Cooke), who tolls us that ill

only necessary to breathe very slowly

slow breathing the blood supply is
lessened sufficiently lo make an in
pression. Certainly when the mind
is uncontrollably active, and so pre
venting sleep, we have ascertained

were worth trusting that the breath
ing .vas quick and short, and they
have found they became more dis
posed to sleep by Ureal hing slowly.
This supports. Dr. Cooke's practice,
but at other limes his plan quiie
failed. It is certainly worth nny
one's while who is occf-Monally
sleepless to give it a trial. In doing
so, they should breathe very quietly,
rather deeply, and at long intervals,
but not long enough to cause the
least feeling jf uneasiness. Iq fine,
they should imitate a person sleep
ing, and do it steadily for several
minutes.
Writing ia Hie Dark.
The noctograph is a simple In
veniiou by means of which any ono
may write in the dark with ease,
and is consequently a blessing to
those whose eyes are overworked.
It may be made by a child. A
board of smooth black walnut,
eleven inches iu length by ten inches
in width, has upon it n walnut frame
like a slate frame, somewhat smaller
than the board. Board and Irame
are fastened together by small
hinges. From side to side of the
frame arc sire'chcd sixteen small
brass wires, end ot;e can writo be
tween them, tho wires serving not
to guide the hand exactly, but to
prevent the running together of the
lines. It ia best to use ordinary
soft paper and a lead pencil. The
paper is held in place by the frame,
which shuts down upou Ih3 board
as one side of a double slate shuts
upon the other. True, any one may
acquire the habit ol writing in the
daik wiihout any such aid, but this
nociogi'aph simplifies matters. There
are many who, from various causes,
did jt impossible to writ6 by a
bright light, and to them wo recoup
mend the use of the noclograph.

take away a signal service officer's
breath. Sergeant Cone had been
ordered from the summit to Wash-,

cided to start last Sunday morning
with two companions. They had a
largo sled, and intended to follow
the track of tho Mount Washington
railway to the base of the mountain.
The party reached the level above
Jacob's Ladder in safety, bat owing
to the steepness of the remaining
slope, the sergeant s companion de
cided to halt, and leave him to con
tinoe l is journey alone. With his
baggage strapped to the sled, be
made a fresh start ; but instead or
proceeding at the former rate of
speed twenty miles an hour ne
dashed down the mountain side
wi'h a velocity of at least forty
miles an hour. Lto soon lost his
balance, and was hurled one hun
dred feet headlong into the deep
snow. His companions reac'ied
him as quicklr as they could, and
then clambered down to the base of
the mountain for assistance, and the
sergeant was finally carried to
Littleton on a litter.
