t MORE TALK ABOUT TROLLEY FRANCHISE. The regular and adjourned meeting of the Borongh (Jonncil was held at Borough Hall, Tuesday evening, April 7th. - Fresent ? Mayor Mnirhead, Counoil men Hillman, Gordon, Kerr, Haines, Hoffman and Galligher, olerk Bur mingham and oonsellor Pearse. Resolution by Hillman regarding the death of the late A. V. Applegate, adopted. Applications for renewal of licenses to keep saloons, of Patriok Fallon, Miohael Welsh, Thomas Mnllen and George Oheeseman Sr., granted. Under the head of unfinished busi ness, Councilman Hillman moved that the trolley franchise be taken up for the second reading, oarried. He then stated that all aotion here tofore taken by the Oounoil ^as in valid. That raised an argument. Hillman said it was past , his under standing vyliy the attention of the oounoil was not called to the faot that the petition of the company was illeg al. Hu said the people were again pointing their fingers at the cOunoil and saying there must be something back of it. He said : ''Again I say it has been a mere farce for three months and the oounoil have only been playing to the gailerv. Why the former oounoil had fixed this franohise up &o the bottom could drop | out of it any miuute, is beyond my f comprehension." (Moved, by Hillm?n, that the aotion of the taking up of the franohise be stopped indefinitely. Oouncilman Galligher then said he didn't think that it was intended to let the bottom fall out of the fran chise. Through the whole thing he thought everything honest and all right. Gounoilman Haines said that when he raised the ooint about the fran ohise no legal advice was wanted. Now they oan see where they got it. Hillman said that everything was wrong. Oounoilman Eerr said he thought the franohise would be ready in time for the company if we have got a democratio majority in the oounoil. Thd mavor then stated that he didn't think that the oounoilman ought to spar over this thing, that it would only take two weeks to have it all in proper shape again. * A request from Mechanisville Hose / Co. No. 1 in regard to exemption papers, of some of it's member, re ceived and granted. Moved by Oouncilman Kerr that the Committee on ordinances draft an or dinance in regard to fiat wheels, oarried. Committee on Streets reported that , they had purohased some gravel and I were already using some of it on the streets. They had also purchased eighteen thousand feet of yellow pine lumber to be used on the-bulkhead. Under the head of miscellaneous business the mayor stated that the death of V. Applegate had oaused a vaoanoy in one of the borough offices* that of assessor, and the oounoil had a right to appoint someone to fill the vaoanoy, but out of respeot for him. they will postpone the appointment until the next regular meeting. HORSE IN A HURRY. ' Driven By Mrs. Al. Parisen ? Started Aorots Sidewalk Toward Its Home. Mrs. Al. Parisen was returning home from a drive into town Monday, when she was hailed by her little son, who wanted to ride to the house, and checked the horse just as she reached the oorner of their street. The horse, seeing its home, the barn looming up, struok up on the sidewalk in its hurry to get there and almost ran into a telephone pole. How the wheel es caped being taken off and the wagon from being turned over is a wonder. However, the horse crossed the corner of G. Stranb's sidewalk, struck into the road round the corner and stopped just as some boys and a man who heard Mrs. Pari sen 's screams, came up. The'man held the horse ana then led him along until between the house and barn. Mr. Parisen came out of the house and assisted his wife out of the carriage, then he got in and drove the horse back to the oorner and gave him an objeot lesson, after whioh he drove up the road, the horse going at a spanking gait and was soon out of sight. GROVER SAW SNAKES. Says It Shed Its Skin While He Was Look ing At It. "Hey, Church! Hey, Ohuroh! Hey, Church 1 Look out, it's ooming your way and its twenty-five feet long, if it's an inoh. " "What is it? Why it's a snake. I just saw it shed its skin and run like dash through the bushes. ' ' It was Sunday and Charles Grover and G. M. Church were in the woods looking for trailing arbutus. . Church turned and went towards the spot where Grover was standing. On looking down he saw a piece of rubber hose about twenty-five feet long lying on the ground. *' That's a healthy looking snake, Grover. " "You dash fool! That isn't it; it's over there in the bushes. I saw him jump out of his skin and go like thunder. Don't I know what a snake is? I've hunted for possums and coons and snakes all my life and have seen many a one and hadn't had anything to drink when I saw them either." Grover swears that wasn't it and if anyone doubts his4word he will take them there any day and show them the skin, for he has marked the spot. HORSE RAN AWAY. Belonged] To Mr. Obrien? Pies, Cakes And Bread Spilled In Street. Mr. Obrien 's horse, attaohed to the wagon filled with bread, cakes and pies, while standing in front of his Broadway store Monday, became frightened by a trolley car passing by and started on a run. The concents of the wagon began to fly out when the horse suddenlylfell and the wagon turned upside down, spilling out the remainder. The wagon windows were all broken.
