Drought Means Ruin to Crops.
ALBANY, N. Y., June 2.? Records of
the Albauy weather bureau show that
the month of May here was the driest
In seventy-five years. The amount of
rainfall recorded for the past mouth
was .15 of an Inch, a trifle more than
the ordinary average of precipitation
for one day. The usual average for
May during twenty-nine years is 3.17
Inches and during seventy-seven years
3.63 inches. On only three days last
month did rain fall here in amounts
recognizable by the instruments of the
weather bureau. The local bureau re
ports that since January there is a de
ficiency in precipitation as compared
with the average of 5.51 inches. The
drought is ruining crop prospects of all
kinds hereabout, and truck gardens
which cannot be watered by artificial
means are practically destroyed.
Meadows are bleaching in the dryness
and the heat, and the hay crop will be
greatly damaged.
BALTIMORE, June 2.-The French
cruiser Tage, the flagship of Rear Ad

STRIKE CLAUSE IN
THE COAL CONTRACT.
Mr. Haney Will Protect Hinself in
the Future Against Loss by
Miners Actions
The oontract of George J. Haney
for the snpply of coal for the water
department at the rate of |3.45 per ton
was read by Oity Olerk Rielley and
ordered signed by the proper officials
at a meeting of the Board of Alder
men last night. A noticeable feature
was the strike clause which protects
Mr. Haney from all loss in case he
cannot get coal on aooount of a strike.
Mr. Haney says he lost in his last
oontract with the oity nearly 11,800
as a result of the big strike of the
miners last winter. Experience is a
dear teacher evidently and in the
future it is safe to predict that shoald
another strike occur the city, and not
Mr. Haney, will have to suffer.
