GOOD FISHING SEASON Weak Fish being Caught In; Seines on the South Shore? In Shallow Water. There is prospeots for a good fishing season this year. The warm weather in May was favorable as an early season generally means plenty of fish. The past few days, however, has tended to drive the fish down and ont of the hay, for an east wind has been blowing almost oontinaally. Fish always nose the wind and that means they have been heading ont. Today, however, they will run up the bav aagin and if the west wind will con tinue there ought to be plenty of fish on tne beds. During the spring, shallow water is the place to look for the weak fish. It is warmer there. As summer approaches they will go deeper. There seems to be plenty of weak fish in the bay according to reports from the south shore. They are being caught in seines there in quantities. Several parties have gone out from this side, however, and have returned with but poor luok. It is evident they do not oast their lines fn right places. Every thing is favorable, however, to a most successful year with rod and reel in Raritan bav. EXCELSIOR'S DATES. Will Play the Crescents of Perth Amboy ?Other Matches Made. Manager Ensrelbreoht, of the Excel sior baseball team, of Pleasant PlainB, has now made arrangements with the foUming baseball teams for games to be played on the Excelsiors diamond, Saturday afternoon for this month : June 6, Orescent A. G., of Perth Am boy; June 13, Lafayette baseball club, of New Brighton ; June 20, Young Men's Christian Association, of West Farms, and on June 27 the famous TJnion A. 0. of Qanarsie, Long Island. jins far this season the Excelsiors have played great ball. FIRST OF SERIES. f The Raritan Oopper Works first team will have the first of the series of games to be played with the Am erican Smelting and Refining Com pany team Saturday afternoon. The game will be oalled at 2.30 o'clock and will be played on the Oopper Works diamond. Higgens will pitch and Lind will oatch for the Oopper Works team. WRESTLING GOSSIP. George Haokensohmidt, the wonder ful Russian wrestler, may be com pelled to retire from the wrestling profession if he follows the wishes of his folks. They want him to give np the game bocause they do not think it is elevating. Haokensohmidt comes from an old Russian family which is said to be very wealthy. Hacken schmidt simply follows the game from mere choice. He likes it and says he would rather be on the mat than eat. Sinoe he became a wrestler, whioh is abont four years now, he has made thousands of dollars. But he has never been to this conntry and adds that if his family becomes too persist ent he will give up wrestling after he has made a tour of the United States under the management of Sam Fitz patriok. Sam has said that Hacken sohmidt would surely come here next August to meet the best men procur able. It is not likely that Ernest Roeber will enter the wrestling game again with the same zest as of former years. Roeber's showing against Gus Ruhlin the other night was far from flatter ing. The retired champion displayed all of his old-time cleverness, but lack ed the required strength. Roeber said yesterday: "My long absence from the mat has made my muscles soft and flabby and it will require at least six months of oonstant training before 1 will be able to get oat and turn them over as I used to do when I was on top. I will do light work during the summer months. If I see that I can stand the strain I will meet them all. But they must post big forfeits for a side bet before I will notice them." Tom Jenkins added another victory to his credit at Montreal the other night by defeating Oarl Pons. Jenk ins took two straight falls at catch-as catch-oan style. Pons made a good I resistance, bnt was never in the hunt 1 from the start. Thejnatch was only sparingly attended. Jack MoCormick, of Philadelnhia, has issued a challenge to meet any wrestler in the business at Graeoo Roman or oatoh-as-catch-can style. McCormiok just now is in the best of shape. He is contemplating a trip to che Klondike, where he has received an offer to meet some good men at wrestling or boxing. McOormick de clares that wrestling matches are all the go in Alaska, and that a really olever fellow can make plenty of money there. The petrified stump of a gigantic redwood tree, which is in an almost perfect state of petrifaction, is at Florissant, not far from Cripple Creek, Col., says the Wide World Magazine. Although numberless people have taken specimens from this stump ag gregating many tons, it is still esti mated to weigh fully 440 tons. To give a better idea of its size it may be well to state that it is 20 feet in diameter and ten feet high. There have been many attempts to dig it up and place it upon exhibition, the last being a scheme to exhibit it nt the great exposition at St. Louis in 1904. Owing to its great weight, however, this had to be abandoned, as there are no railway cars capable of carrying anywhere near its weight. What, perhaps, makes it more of a curiosity is the fact that this Kocky mountain region is a country of email trees, and that there are no giant redwoods within a thousand miles of this stump ? which goes to ?how that nature has changed the entire vegetable growth of this sec tion, as nothing requiring the semi tropical heat of a redwood tree would grow at this altitude now. Where to Apply. "Dear Miss Scrubbins," wrote the wise mother to her son's teacher, "if you want an excuse for Willie's ab sence from school, ask him for one. He's the best boy for excuses that lives. He gives them to me a dozen times a day. He can give an excuse for anything that happens, whether it's n rip in his trousers or a fight with a neighbor's boy. As long as you have him in your room, I do not see why it should be necessary to apply to me for an excuse at all." ? Chicago Post. He wm Competent Himself. Bobby's father was breaking the news to him. "How would you like to have a lit tle brother, Bob?" he asked. "First rate," replied the youngster, cheerfully. Marie ol Solid Unlit with All Mark* au<l H<>? uiln rlva ?>f I'rerlous StouCM. It appears that perions have not been altogether mistaken in suppos ing that the shah of Persia possesses some treasures that cannot be match ed on earth. A brief statement as to the extent of his riches is found iri the "Courier des Jitates Uuis," says a translation made for the Literary Digest. The English jeweler who offered the shah the modest sum of $4,000, 000 for the jewels which he wears on ceremonial occasions probably knew what he wan about, anil would at least have stood a good chance to get his money back if the offer had been accepted. But what would he or any one else do with* the famous terres trial globe which his majesty pos sesses at Teheran? This globe is made of solid gold and weighs about seventy pounds. The boundaries of countries, and oth er marks, are made of precious stones, the total number of which is said to be. more than f>0 00',). The oceans are represented by thousands of emeralds, Persia is blue willi many turquoises, Africa is abla/.e with rubies, France and England sparkle with hundreds of diamonds. One of the most beautiful turtles in the world is found in Africa, and a few fine specimens were recently captured there and taken to Europe.
