When the 9.40 o'clock train pullod out of the Central Station last night the engineer gave the whistle such a toot that the horse owned by Mrs. Arnold, of Metnohen, which was tied to a post, in front of Smith street store, became badly frightened and broke the halter. Just as the animal started olf on a run it was caught by some who were nearbv. The harness was slightly damaged. BODY IS IDENTIFIED. The mystery surrounding the iden tity. of the woman whose body was found Tuesday night in a clump of bushes near South Plainfield, N. J., has been cleared. She was Mrs. Alice Smith, of Westfleld, N. J. Mrs. Smith was demented and wandered in January last from the home of her son-in-law, Arthur Mullen. The mur der theory is scouted, although a dent was found in the skull. It is believed the woman started to tramp to South Plainfield, where her daughter former ly lived, and that she became exhaust ed by the cold. The steamer Svealand finished un loading at Guggenheims yesterday and sailed for Norfolk via New York. o The tug Sachem is in port today awaiting a tow for down east ports. The schooner Charles L. Jeffrey arrived at Vineyard Haven yesterday on her way to Boston from this port. The pilot boat New York is being overhauled at the Raritan Dry Dock. $50,000 Jias already been spent in the building of the large dry dock for the Raritan Dry Dock Company and fully that much more will have to be spent before it is oompleted.
