Seamen employed on the Michigan Central car ferries struck yesterday afternoon In order to enforce their demands for a wage increase or $20 a month. For a short time it looked as If the Michi gan Central would be seriously handi capped, but within a short time the strikers were replaced by nonunion men, and the river schedule was re sumed with comparatively no loss of time. In conse quence of the refusal of the proprie tors of the large bakeries in Baltimore to grant the demands made recently by the journeymen bakers' union a general strike was begun, and it is es timated that about 212 men are idle. While the large bakerie^ affected were able to supply most of their customers with bread, 110 attempt was mude to bake any cake or pastry. Health of the Pope. ROME, June 9.? Charles Robinson, Patrick Mansfield and Edward O'Mara were arrested by Offioer Shultz last night on charges of being drank and disorderly. Shultz arrested Robinson first abont 10 o'clock and when they reached the corner of High and Fayetta street?, Robinson made an attempt to escape and broke the chain which held him by the wriBt. Robinson was finally looked in a cell and Officer Shnltz went back and got O'Mara and Mansfield. When they were arraigned before Recorder Pickersgill this morning Robinson and Mansfield got sixty days each and O'Mara got sixty and had thirty added to his sentenoe, making ninety days for thanking the recorder for his trouble. In eaoh case Shnltz not only charged the men with being drnnk and dis orderly, bat he said they had attempt ed to rob another man who was drnnk and complaints against them had been repeatedly made against them for stealing bread from a Hall avenue bakery. $42 $42 $42. The rail way postal lines between Greenville and Columbia. S. C., and between Greenville and Charleston were bro ken again by the high waters. ' The service also is broken between Hamlet and Atlanta, Ga. There is no postal communication between Monroe and Clinton. Representative Johnson of the Spartanburg (S. C.) district was at the post office department and said that 10,000 people in his section of the state had been thrown out of employ ment by the washing away of factories and mills. At the office of the corporation counsel there is de light over the way in which they man aged to notify William R. Hearst of the pending trial of a suit against the city as a result of the explosion of part of his display of fireworks in Madison avenue on election night. The service was effected by utilizing the wireless telegraphic system, the notice being served on Mr. Hearst personally at his stateroom door at 2 o'clock on the morning of May 5 while the North German Lloyd steamship Kaiser Wil helrn II. was more than a day off the Lizard. While Emperor William was driving to the hall in which a singing competition was to take place a lady admirer threw a bouquet into the imperial carriage. The bouquet struck the emperor's hel met and was so forcibly thrown that the empress, who was sitting beside Emperor William, jumped up, fright ened. The thoughtless enthusiast was arrested, given a severe lecture and then discharged. The Frankfurt people had been warned previously not to throw flowers into the imperial car riage.
