Aug. lit.—The explosion of a tank of gasoline in the basement of j a six story block occupied by several [manufacturing concerns on Worm 1 wood street. South Boston, caused a tire which inside of fifty minutes de stroyed every combustible foot of the building, meantime precipitating a panic, in which scores of employees received injuries. The monetary loss is $150,000. Immediately following the explosion a dense volume of smoke en veloped flic building, and 25(1 girls em ployed by William Byers, manufactur er of lace curtains, on the sixth floor, stampeded for the stairways, the only exits, and. screaming and fighting, made their way to the ground. In the struggle many fell and were trampled upon. It was at lirst believed that loss of life bad resulted, but a search of the ruins lias not revealed any evi dence of fatalities. < nlrli I’owprn* Trial. GEORGETOWN. Ivy.. Aug. 19.—The direct and cross examinations of Caleb Powers, on the stand in his own de fense. has been concluded and devel oped little that was new. The New6 has received a marked copy of the Nevada County Daily Morning Miner in which, under the heading of “Pioneer Returns,” is an account of J. C. Heney, of Perth Am boy, and his nephew O. J.
