College football teams are getting down to work and some general idea of their strength can now be had. At Princeton about thirty-five men reported for the first hard practice of the season. Nearly all of the men were old players, for the new material is not expected to come out until next Wednesday, when the entrance ex amftiations will be over. The first practice game with the scrub will bo played on Wednesday. Yale’s first week of football practice closed Saturday with thirty-six candi dates on hand to open the season. This squad, which is much smaller than usual, will be augmented this week by the new arrivals among the freshmen, but there is no probability that many new men of promise will then appear. Yale this year has re ceived from the schools hardly any men of reputation. Captain Marshall, of Harvard, made a careful study of his material during the past week, and has come to the conclusion that he can turn out quite an oiiiuuk au tuovuu an urn uuu iiiiui represented the Crimson last year, and he hopes to have a .better one. Mar shall has been cheered by the news that three of last year’s varsity will return to Cambridge and take part in the game this season. The centre trio at Columbia, while not exceptionally heavy, are clevei players, and Smythe snaps the ball well and can fight like a demon. The line guards, Aigeltinger and Whit well, are tall and powerful. They have both played football several years and have reputations for aggros siveness. CADETS FOOTBALL PRACTICE. The St. Moysius Cadets football team will be out for practice Saturday afternoon on Boyer’s field. This will be tbe first time they have been or the gridiron this year. The ■ cadeti have some good material to choosf from and when the team meets sohh of the local teams it will be a firsi rate game. ON KEASBEY DIAMOND. The Delta baseball team will play Saturday afternoon on the Keasbey daimond with a scrub team. The game will be called to order at J o’clock. The battery for the Deltas will be Oleson and Johnson. Junior Nines. The Little Eastons defeated the Railroad Jacks, yesterday afternoon, on the land company diamond by a score of 8 to 6. Tomorrow afternoon they will play again. THE HIGHBALL IN WAR. Potency of the Amerlcun Thirst Rem edy Illustrated in a I'anauia Revolution. Our esteemed neighbor, Panama, places the world under emphatic obliga tions by producing something novel in the way of revolutions The government. al convulsion the other day was due, not to a general uprising or disaffection in the army, but to the untamed thirst oi Gen. Varquez Cobos, relates the Phila delphia North American. The gallant man was led by some light hearted person to tamper with the Amer ican highball. Possessing a tempera ment attuned to the innocuous beverages of France and Spain, he made a fatal er ror jn attempting to harmonize with it the seductive drink offered by “el Americano,” and the resulting discord was frightful. After the first one the general was more impressed with the dignity and power of his position than he had ever been before in his career. After the sec ond he decided that he was the savior o' his country, or ought to be. The third brought to him visions of an oppressed Panama, and the fourth and fifth fired his martial heart to deeds of patriotic valor. t Straightway he assembled the army, overthrew the government, rhaspd the governor to the woods—and fell asleep. When he awoke he was under arrest, and Is still In seclusion trying to find out. what happened. Positively Di-ctnl. Husband—1 wish 1 knew where I eould find a buried treasure.
