SIX DAY BICYCLE RACE.
The famous six-day bicycle race,
which has been an annual fixture at
Madison Square Garden, Now York,
for many years, will be ngain contest
ed at the ten-lap garden track this
year durihg the week of December 6
to 12. Already the prospective com

chosing training quarters, and making
necessary arrangements for the long
grind which brings fame and ability
to some cyclists and makes physical
wrecks of others.
ROOSTERS’ DATES.
The Royal Roosters football team
are now filling all of the vacant dates
for Saturday and holiday games very
rapidly. Noxt Saturday they expect

The Raritan Copper Works baseball
diamond will be used by a number of
golf players every Saturday afternoon
now that the baseball season is over.
The field will be put in first class
order for the lovers of the game.
THINK IT IS EARLY.
The Pop Social Cub has not been
able to make arrangements for the
bowling match which was to have
been rolled off at the Raritan alleys
last week. Many of the players think
it is too early to commence the games.

Barton street, which may be regarded
as the parent street of the purlieu, dates
from 1722 and was named after its firs!
owner, Barton Booth, the actor, of Cow
ley, in Middlesex, hence Cowley street
in the same neighborhood. Booth was
famous as Cato in Addison’s play, in
which part he delighted the town. The
removal of these streets may be de
scribed as a double injury to Booth’s
memory, kept green in the abbey close
by. Booth’s bust in poet’s corner was
erected by his second wife, Mrs. Laid
law, the actress, in 1772. Educated at
Westminster school, bound to the
neighborhood by ties of property and
honored in the abbey, Booth's name still
demands respect. He is said to have
been an ancestor of Junius Brutus
Booth and therefore of the latter’s sons,
Edwin Booth and John Wilkes Booth,
the assassin of President Lincoln.
Wor.t of All MoMiiiiiloe.,
The champion mosquitoes of the
world, according to a traveler, are those
of Taylor's island, on the Choptank
river, Maryland. They are often hall
an inch long and are perfectly black,
with white feet. They do not sing and
their bite is like the sting of a bee. Peo
ple who are obliged to go out of doors
wear as a protection a hoop on theii
heads, from which hangs a netting,
which is belted to the waist. They carry
about them a piece of fat pork, which
when applied to a sting or bite acts as
an antidote. The Choptank river region
is the great market garden of Baltimore,
Philadelphia and other eastern cities
and one theory to account for the re
markable size of the mnsmiitnps fs Hint
they feed on the splendid fruits and vege

and are thus fattened to a far greater
degree than their brothers who live in
less favored localities.—Chicago Chron

BADGERS.
Great Rplcnren in EirKR^Have Partlc>
ular Likina for Kent and Larvae
of WaMi>M and lieea.
The badger is a great epicure in eggs
and much of the hostility of gamekeep
ers to this animal lies undoubtedly ii
the fact that it will, when it gets th<
chance, devour a whole r.est of partridge
or pheasant eggs. Badgers are said also
to be fond of honey; and knowing the
extraordinary craving of their South
African cousin, the ratel, for this deli
cacy, I should say it is not improbable
that they may occasionally partake oi
it, says H. A. Bryden, in Ixmgman’s. It
is certain that these animals have a
particular liking for the nest and larvae
of wasps and wild bees, digging down
wift strong feet and infinite persever
ance till they attain their object. Ir
the captive state a young badger was
brought up on a diet first of (he milk oi
a retriever bitch, by which it was fos
ter-mothered, afterwards of eggs and
milk, then of fish and meat. It approved
of bread and potatoes, when crumbled
up and mixed with milk. It would oc
casionally eat shot birds, and once, get
ting into a hen house, killed five chick
ens. These animals are said by keepers
to kill and devour freply young rabbits;
that they do partrflie of this fare at times
is, I think, certain; but that they destroy
any ve-y considerable number of rabbits
in the course of the year is more than
doubtful. Still, the badger is carnivor
ous In his tastes, and is not. even by his
kindliest friends, to b? absolved from
devouring at times tender rabbits and
even the young of game birds when he
can get hold of them.
FARMERS FOR THE VELDT.
Committee of the Imperlnl South Af
rienn Association Plans Small
County Colonies of Uritons.
A committee of the Imperial South
African association has been formed for
the purpose of establishing "small coun
ty colonies” on the veldt. The different
county organizations throughout (he
realm will make a selection of farmers
suitable for the enterprise, and each set
tlement will be named after Hie British
county which supplies the emigrants.
Certainly, says the London Evening
Standard, it is desirable to strengthen
the white element in South Africa, espe
cially when an invasion of Indians and
Chinese appears to be at hand. And the
best form of that strengthening is Brit
ish emigrants used to country life and
work. But is the farming grass well
adapted for thg purpose? In the first
place, one might have thought that it
was wanted at home. Among the men
named as taking part in the scheme are
the duke of Westminster and othergreat
landowners. ,They may find no diffi
culty in securing tenants, but small
'squires are not so fortunate. More
over, it must be feared that the Engibh
farmer will not easily adapt himself to
the conditions of South African agricul
ture, as different as could be in all re
spects to those in which he has been
reared. The more successful he has
been at home, the\ess inclined he (ffill
be to go to school again.
