Y., Nov. 5. — Six men were killed and many were in jured by a series of explosions on Iona island, in the Hudson river, opposite here. The explosions occurred in sheds used by the government for the stor age of dynamite and powder. Nearly ull the structures on the res ervation were damaged, Ions of ammu nition were destroyed, and the total loss cannot be far from $500,000. Through the attempt of one of the employees to extract a fuse a 13 inch shell exploded, and the disaster fol lowed In two large explosions and a se ries of small ones. Ail the countryside was shaken, and the shock was felt with seismic force In Foeksklll, High land Falls and towns within a radius of ten miles. A shower of shell and shrapnel fell upon neighboring farms and hamlets, endangering the lives of scores of persons, while many dwell ings were damaged. Iona island is close to the west shore of the Hudson, and the explosions wrecked houses along the hank. There were sixty men employed on the is land- Several lost their lives while en gaged In lighting the lire thut followed the first explosion. The blowing up of Iona island has been frequently predicted by persons living on the mainland near the place. There wns an emphatic protest against the occupancy of the Island by the government. At the time of the Spnn Ish-Amcrlcan war it was said that Spanish spies tried to blow up the warehouses, but no confirmation of the report could be had. A small panic was caused in St Jo seph's home at Foeksklll. quite three miles away,, where the child Inmates were terrified l»y the breaking of the windows.
