NEW YORK, Deo. 8.—Enthusiasm reached a tremendous pitch in the six day bicycle race at Madison Square Garden here when the representatives of favorite teams put on every ounce in an effort both to gain the lend and fo reach the record, which they were still four miles behind. There was a wild hurst of excitement when E. F. Root gained a lap. His triumph was short lived, however, for hardly had tlie plaudits of the crowd died out before the judges decided not lo allow Root's gain, because, as they announced, he hud secured it through the pace of Jimmy Bowler of the Chi cago team, who, contrary to the rules of the grind, was on the truck at the same time for his team mate, Fisher. The crowd, which was wrought up to a high pitch by Root's thrilling ride, received the decision of tlie olliclals With hooting. The hot chase after lioot was excit ing in the extreme und brought the en tire crowd to its feet. Bundled so closely that a blanket would have cov ered them, Johnny Bedell, Bobby Wal tliour and Fisher went after the speedy Itoot on the back stretch in their efforts to best one another. The trio came to grief and went down iu a smash. There was a cry of anxiety as the trainers rushed to the spot. Each of the three riders was damaged but slightly, however, and uone of them left the track. The four lending teams were I.ean dcr and Butler, Waltliour and Munroe, Floyd Krebs and Peterson and New kirk and Jacobson, with a score of 3G0 miles 1 lap each. Peter Mnher Debarred. I - |“I know a man once who did thchigh w&ymaingact by robbing a citizen of his Money & the point of a big six-shooter, aid yetjthe robber was an honest man, arid is fjp considered to-day," said C’ol. CiiarlesfA. Edwards, of Texas, St. Louis and Washington, to a crowd of friends, who listened to his entertaining ttories of expediences in the Lone Star state, relates Hie Washington Post. "You needn’t laugh at my calling him hpnest after having performed such a Dick Turpin stunt. Attend to my story, and you’ll see how peculiar conditions will now and then make a man play a rule foreign to his real character. He was a young ranchman, and had fallen in love with a winsome girl—a belle in one of the counties adjacent to San An tonio. The girl was going to school in that ancient town, and right after the spring roundup her lover, with a couple of hundred dollars In his pockets, pro ceeded to 'Santone' to meet the Idol of his soul, whom he had not seen in many moons. He needed the cash to buy the finest suit of store clothes to be had. as he wanted to look his best, and sti?l there would be money enough left to buy all the candy and ice cream one maiden would want. "He arrived too late in the day to make his purchases, and that night some sleek hotel thief got into his room and abstracted his entire roll. Here was a situation at once desperate and pathetic—a raw, unsophisticated youth from the ranch, still dressed in cow boy costume, despoiled of his last cent, crazy to see his sweetheart and without a friend nearer than 100 miles. The people who could help him couldn’t be reached by wire; there was no time fur a letter, and he was too shy to ask aid of strangers. Then it was that he med itated a plan which would only have en tered his head under such direful con ditions. "The snealt thief had considerately left the pair of big Colt’s revolvers that every cowman used to carry In the southwest. With their aid it was pos sible to get funds, and the victim of rob bery would himself become robber. So when night came on he waited in a comparatively dark street the coming of a prosperous looking man. Finally one did come along who ‘looked like ready money,’ and this citizen, ere he knew it, was looking into the muzzle of one of the 45’s. ‘I don’t mean to steal your money, but you’ve got to let me have $50, or I’ll take it if I have to kill you.’ was the stern order, and with saga cious promptitude Mr. Man forked over all his wealth, which was considerably more than the sum specified. “Taking just $50. the cowboy gave back the surplus, and asked the name and address of the other in the politest sort of way, telir.g him he would re turn his money in less than a week. The man was glad to get off with iis life, and ambled off to hunt the police, who gave vain chase. "Just four days later there was one very much surprised man in San An tonio, when an express package con taining $50 was handed him. Being a good-natured sort of citizen, he took a lenient view of the affair, and didn’t try to put detectives on the track of the party who had made the forced loan. That's all of it. except that not very long afterward there was a wedding in San Patricio county, and the youngster who engineered the holdup, and the pretty girl on whose account he did it, were the principals.” CATCHING THE OCTOPUS. Acetylene bn nip I* 1 «e«l with Grent SSueee.NN l»y Medlterruneun Ff^icrmeo. The octopus is such a peculiarly re pulsive looking cretaure that it would not seem calculated to appeal as an article of food even to a hungry man; but the Italians have no prejudice against the fish, and they eat it with out question. In a consular report on the trade of southern Italy for 1902, an interesting account is given of the method of capturing the octo pus in the Mediterranean. At the end of a long bamboo-pole Is hung a line baited with a piece of red rag; and this, dangled in front of the rocky hiding-places of the octopus, is sufficient 10 tempt him from his lair. In his efforts to get near the bait the creature is enticed towards the boat, in which the fisherman awaiis him, armed with a trident, and at the right moment the octopus is impaled on its spikes. By night a bright light is used to attract the prey, and this in past times would take the form of an iron cradle full of resinous pine, which was carried at the head of the boat. But science has stepped in, and the fishermen now employ an actylene lamp, which seems to be as attractive to the octopus as a red rag. Unusually large catches have been made since this form of ight was adopted; and, although its pioneers tried to keep it secret, they did not succeed in doing so, and now so many octopods are being caught thai the consul general is of opinion that the coasfafwill be overfished. That, howeverWs not likely to be the case for the ifetopus comes of a very pro lific raaft__ i /'5 l’ Clever Move.
