'1 — After the Minstrels Last Week a Sochi Hour Was Spent at Ha tvann's When the Hat Was Passed and the Collectioi Amounted to $12 Which Was Given To ward the Hospital. The hospital fnml being raised to build a reception room and morgue at the hospital, received a big boost to day when Dr. Frnnk Crowtlior stated that $12 had been raised by the Elks for this purpose. Following tho min strels civen last week, the members gathered at Hartmann’s for a social hoar. Daring the evening (he hat was passed and the proceeds amounted to $12. This is a worthy example for other lodges, brotherhoods and societies. All the members are more or less in terested in the institution. Tliev may have to go there themselves sometime. The additions are necessary and the money must come from the people to do the work. Let it be your Christ mas offeriug. Special to the Evening News. New Brunswick, Deo.21:—The Jap anese sailor, who is accused of Killing a fellow countryman at Carteret, July 29, was plaoed on trial this morning . Judge Ooweuhoyen and Lawyor Hoagland of New Brunswick, are in charge of his case. The testimony this morning showed that four sailors, the chief engineer and the first officer of the vessel Hug 011 a, went ashore and visited n saloon. The stabbing occurred when they were returning to the vessel. The prisoner’s name is Jnnichek Matsush ima. He is said to have done the hinuuiu^ vwiu a uuuv nut t uiauu from a file. Tho wound severed the vicims arm and an arterv was cut. The accused is said to have gone to the vessel after the affair and burned tho clothing he had on with tho ex ception of a sweater. Tins was after ward found. John Trisbook, a olerk in a Carteret drug store, was on the stand this morning. He had taken three picnres of tho locality and one of the dead man. The trail will con tinue all day and tomorrow. Mrs. Huff’s Mother Dead. Mrs. Rose Grimes, of 183 West Fifty sixth street, New York city, mother of Mrs. John Huff, of Mechanic street this city, died at her home, Saturday night, from a complication of dis eases. Mrs. Grimes was about eighty years old. The funeral will be held at 2 o’clock tomorrow afternoon. In | torment will he nt Rosedale, near Ronndout on the Hudson. Forrest L. Smith began work this afternoon surveying tire lot at Jeffer son and Maplo streets, for tire erection of the federal building. He was giv en the work by Potmaster George H. Lice, tire onstodian of the building. Mr. Tice was notified by J. S, Tay lor. the Chief Supervising architect at Washington, D. C., to have the ground made ready and plans drawn anil submitted at ouco. This is the lot that was given to the government by j. C. MeOov. It is near the new public library and is destined to be tho business center. Mr. Smith, when seen by a News re porter, said: " “I received word this morning from Mr. Tice, and will commence the work of surveying this afternoon. It will take about two weeks to complete the job, as besides the laving out of the ground, it is necessary to take a number of photos, 5x8 an d send them to Washington for inspection." WOMAN WANTED SUFPORT. Husbaul Said He was Too ill to Work Hard. Mrs. Fred Jeszenak was in Police court this morning to make com plaint against her l.nsband for non support of the three children. Mis. Jeszenak said that they lived formerly at the corner of State and Jefferson streets, where they kept a shoe store, bnt that six weeks ago Jeszenak hr cl sold tho business and had not contrib uted a cent toward her or the children support since then. Jeszenak said that he was too ill to work hard, but was employed on the farm of A. Clausen, of Metnchen, for l.ts board. Mrs. Jeszenak was advised to see Larry Dalton, overseer of the poor, and ses what he could do toward making her husband support her. New Brunswick, Dec. 21:—“I have never see such actions since the war,” declared Referee James Parker, of Perth Amboy, when Lawyer Clarence Kelsev, of New York, in a fit of an ger, hurled an inkwell across the room at Lawyer Robert Adrain, of this city. Mr. Parker was sitting in the bankruptcy case of the Fisher Company. Mr. Kelsey was examin ing Samuel F. Wylie, who was a trustee of the company. Mr. Adrain objected to Kelsey's .examination and made some references to the lawyer's abilities which caused Kelsev to de clare that ho was no schister lawyer and he grabbed the inkwell and hurled it across the room. Adrain dodged behind another lawyer and the missile smashed against the wall, splattering ink everywhere. Adrain then grabbed another inkwell and prepared to hurl it at Kt-lsay when friends intervened. Referee Parker was highly indignate that such a thing should occur in his court and ho called the lawyers down in round terms. Kelsey says he will sue Adrain for slander. EXPOSURE WAS FATAL. George Carter Died Saturday Night Without Regaining Consciousness. FELL ON THE SAND. Was Carried to His Home and Medical Aid Summoned but of no Use—Interment Will be Made in Alpine Cemetery this City — Had Two Brothers Living Here. George Carter, formerly of thie city, bat lately of Wood aveune, Tottenville, who was fonnd unconscious on the Staten Island shore Thursday after noon, as told in the News, never re covered consciousness. He died late Saturday night. When found Mr. Carter had faced death in three different ways by a paralytic stroke, freezing and being carried away by the tide which was washing close to his body. Air. carter was sixiy-nve years uru and a soldier of the Civil war. His father was the late Alfred Carter, a pronnniut citizen of Perht Amboy. The funeral will be held from his late residence on Wood avenue at 1 o’clock tomorrow afternoon. The sermon will be preached by Key. John Fair, rector of St. Stephen’s Episcopal chnrcli, Amboy avenue, 'i'ottenville. The interment will then be made in Alpine cemetery. Besides a wife Mr. Carter leaves two brothers, Albert Carter, of Gor don street, and Gardner Carter, an employee of the Pertn Amboy Oyster Company. — —-.
