The Indian exhibits the same quick ness in grasping a new idiom ur strik ing phroso ns the white man. altbougt restricted necessarily to Indian sources says the New Orleans Times-Democrat it is a remarkable fact that the slant of the white man hnds little favor wit! the rods, although they are eager ti seize upon anything good in any othet Indian tongue. Their confinement tr tlie bounds of reservations has. had tin effect of purifying their lanr tinge i: that there is Htlie of the old mixturt of other tribe.-' to he found. Ail Indian language is spoken in gut tural. deep, thr: aty tones, with smal syllables and lmtcb use of the vowels Words of tii- hieux sometimes meat whole phrases of English. Take, to: instance, the old word "a-mah-pai-an ta-pil," which expresses a long sen lencc in English. It means tk.it the Indian has seer something silhouetted against the sky after dual: has act in. and that he ha1 watched until he could distinguish tin object by the red light of the aftc glow. Tendcrfeet scarcely ever ob serve this peculiar phenomenon of tin plains, but old 'plainsmen have notice: that always in the evening when dark ne-'S is gathering i ver tiip land thcr i3 a fuint roapp:-r.rauce of glowing re light, as if the sun were about to rise again. The Indians, who are great at no tiring things, understood this phenom t-non and Watched for it. When writ ten the word would have b: on "wa yan-ka-pi,” added if tlie object h it been seen by more than one. The aifi: “pi” always signifies the plural num her. The old Indian words wigwam am tomahawk have no longer a place it the language of the reds. These an: many others are practically extinct They were strictly speaking, words o astern tribes, and in some cases the: were the inventions of trappers am plainsmen. The Sioux word for wig warn is .epee, which has a more essen tially Indian sound. Hy prefixing and affixing an Indiat word may be lengthened nut into mean lugs that would require a whole para graph of English to translate. Tii language is very comprehensive, and it Its arealer purity is more poetical thn; formerly, shorn as it is of what cor responded to Indian slang.
