Lynch, Veteran Baseball Umpire, and New Head Of National League Nearly all old timers remember I when Thomas J. Lynch, familiarly known ae Tom Lynch, the new pres ident of the National Baseball League, was an umpire. He was one of the best In the business, too, for he ran the game right and was a strict disciplinarian. He started as an -umpire In the Eastern League, then went to the New England League and wbb called to the Na tional League In 1888. He dropped out for a year In 1892, but went back the next year. In the spring of 1895 Lynch was umpiring a name at the Polo ground» in New York when two players got Into a row. Lynch fined them $100 each. Andy Freedman, then the princtpal stock holder In the New York club, called Lynch a robber and several other names. There and then Lynch quit the business. The league upheld htm In the fines, but he refused to take up the Indicator again. He has since been in the theatrical business. MANY MOTORDROMES. Plan* Being Completed For 8everat Big Auto Racing Plant·. From present Indications It will not be long before the automobile world will nee a chain of motordromes ex tending from coast to const. At pres ent there are circular auto speedways at Atlanta and Indianapolis. Plans have been completed for similar struc tures in New York and in Detroit It la understood that a strong movement is under way to provide Chicago with α motordrome, and now work line been started on a big Los Angeles track. In the event of all the proposed motor dromes being completed it will give this country u well linked chain for circular track speed contests. The California motordrome will be a most pretentious plant. A special ef fort will be made to have the structure completed in about three months. Plans hare been made to stage the opening speed pageant next April. The hurried construction of the track is made necessary by the fact that weeks of testing will be required before the formal opening. The present plans call for a circular track. It will be of the "saucer" type, special attention being paid to the banking at the turns. The track will be one mile in circumference. With the adopting of plans calling for a wood roadbed the promoters made a decided departure from the usuui line followed in motordromo construction. The track will be built of heavy tim bers, planked with finished lumber. The banking all the way round will be so steep as to permit of 120 miles an hour speed with comparative safety.
