Papering S3 a Roem Including a nice paper. RENAUD & DAVIS 18IA find 181 New Brunswick At«l, Perth Ajnboj, N. J. "Phone 30L. WHY ARKANSAS MT'ST AnVFRTTSE. Thoy say that Arkansas Is awak ening. That's absolutely trae. And it's high tlfte. Looking around over the state It's a bit* hard to believe that Arkansas is a century old. If one wished to D.on't Sink Money by purchasing cheap paints and onp, simply because their initial coat is slightly less than the good Kind. Devoe'a Paint costs only what a good dependable article should, yet, goes farthest, wears longest, and costs no more for the labor in applying, hence is the most economical to use. Why not try it? The J. J. HOCKENJOS CO., 829 Broad St., Newark s be merely complimentary, ho Bright siyr of her that shq ^ears her age re markably well. If he wished to be <yltlcal, he might say that she has dawdled along Inexcusably In her growth and development. After a hundred years of life, any state, lying, right In the heart of things, Inconceivably rich In all nat ural resources, with farming lands equal to any demajid that may be made upon them, otfght to have "got somewhere." ^ Arkansas hasn't. Compare her development with that of any neighbor state, and she's miles and miles behind. What's the trouble? How does it | happen that Oklahoma, for Instance, I In nkr callow youth, lying right j neit door, has won recognition In a decade, while Arkansas, with as much or more to offer In Opportuni ties, has lagged and drowsed for ten times that span? There's Just one possible answer. I don't know the motto of the state of Arkansas; but it migtat be this: "We don't advertise." That expresses exactly the spirit of the state In the last hundred years. This long time, the rest of the Southwest has been quick with new' life. Ai-kansas has slept. This long time, the rest of the Southwest has held the center of the stage in immigration affairs. Arkansas has stood In the wings, a mere "supee." This long time, the rest of the Southwest has been working out Its destiny In sweat and blood. Arkan sas has loafed and whittled.—Wil liam R. 'Dlghton, In- "Arkansas' New Word 'Advertise,,' " In the National Magazine for September. NEVER HAD PAJAMAS. The Congressional campaign has revived a lot of old stories told by Colonel A. K. McClure, the veteran newspaper man. One which he of ten tells relates to the tlo>e of the I Spanish-American war. Trie ladles' of Conshohocken were engaged In • making a supply of pajamas for the soldlerg of a favorite regiment. That type of sleeping garment was new In those days, and the relatives of the soldiers were determined that every marf*ln the regiment should Irave the "most stylish thing obtain- j able In a robe de nult," as the young lady from a Washington boarding school said. "My boys have .always worn shirts," said an old lady, busily stitching on the modern garments. "I hope they'll know what to do with these." \ The parcel was duly sent to Cuba, but no word reached the ladles from the supposedly grateful wearers of the "robes de nult." They waited a month and thea wired Colonel A. K. McClure, who hailed from Con | shohocken: "Anjrtous to know if you got the pajamas last month." ' The Colonel read the telegram and marveled. "He was a whole souled citizen, but wore nothing newer than a nightshirt when he slumbered. He would nip a Blander in the bud; his wire read: "Story Is a lie out o£ whole cloth, probably fabricated by enemies to ruin me politically. Admit am not i total abstainer, but never had pa- [ jagiaa 1 ast month or any other I time."—Joe Mitchell Chappie, fn 1 "Affairs at Washington," In the Na tional Magazine for September.
