It is an actual fact that fine, big white free-stone peaches were being carted through the streets of Mt. Holly, in Burlington county, last week selling at from twenty to twenty-Bve cents a basket. Ono - farme;· between Burlington and Mt. h y is letting his peaches rot on tha trees. He says that by the time he paid for the picking and carting, he would not be able to get his money back in the sale of the fruit, let alone make a profit. Other farmers aro feeding peaches to their hogs. Every kind of an old peach tree is loaded down with fruit in that section of the state. Only the choicest are being picked and they are selling for & song. But In Perth Amboy prices aro more reasonable than In a great many places. People in the cities are starving to death while but a few miles away in the country, the best of food is going to waste. How to get them together is the problem. It is one of the greatest questions of the times. It showe how incompetent we are, after all. It is one of the crimes of civilisation that such a » *e of afTairs should exist. I eta ι Tlifho H THF FltEEHOMtEKS. With the "election rapidly approach ing when everyone Is politics and particularly those holding public office. Is anxious about his reputation as an official, we would like to suggest to the Board of Freeholders that, If they do not care to board up the road opened by the Pennsylvania railroad as a short cut from the bridge into South Amboy, to have a sign erected bearing some such state ment as follows: "This road was opened by the nnsylvania Railroad Company and Imposed to be maintained by that [oration. The county of Mlddle in no way to blame for its fonon and ha9 nothing whatever ι with It. The county, road to South Amboy is etraight ahead." This sign should also carry a ïjiarker pointing in the direction of ^le-in-the-wall. -As -bad as the ν V "hole" is, you get it all at once and are relieved of the mile or more of torture which one encounters on the railroad company's road. Thousands of autoists who use this route to the shore do not know that the county is not responsible for this Pennsylvania nightmare in the form of a highway. The result is, the county gets the blame. Our roads are poor enough, goodness knows, without having to shoulder responsibility for something that does not belong to us. Not only the reputation of the freeholders, but of the entire county is at stake. Let's make the facts known. FOR THE WHOLE PEOPLE. If you favor a park where you can go with your friends to spend a few J hours in the open to enjoy the breezes of the bay or a jolly dip In the water, let your representative In the Hoard of Aldermen know how you feel about it. Unless you want the people in the southern end of the city to get all the pleasures of the Bluff you have got to persuade the city fathers to buy the only remain ing tract left on the Bluff suitable for park purposes. The crowds of people in that section Sunday afternoon show the popularity of the section. These people should have a place there that they can call their own. The only way for them to be able to do this is for the city to buy a tract and set It aside for the use of all alike. Why not do something reallv worth while for the people before it is too late? Where are all those warlike anarchists who were preaching violence in Union Square, New York, a few weeks ago, and who delighted in bomb throwing? These men ought to have been the first to sail for Europe where death and destruction is everywhere. It is a thousand to one, however, that they are lying very low these days, glad to be safe In New York where law and order reign supreme. Not having heard anything of the army worms lately it is to be pre sumed that they have answered the call of Europe and have sailed with the reservists to join the colors. Having a real war on their hands, the G. Λ. R. veterans in convention at Detroit have something besides their own valorous deeds of the pa3t to talk about. We have with us today—the oyster and the county fair. The mayoralty contest looks like Adam Eckert against the field. ; PARAGRAPHS Vacations can never be made un popular. Cultivate good nature. It is good for the appetite. Half the pleasure of a vacation is In the anticipation. The hand that rocks the boat never lives to rule the cradle. However, baseball fans are still loy ally rallying to their colce. Clotho» make the man, the lack of them the faehlonable woman. Are you tndignant over the boost In diamond prlcesf Neither are we. Conditions In the Balkan· are not so much the result of a crisis as of a habit. Perhaps the over-the-eea. aviator I will now lose Interest In his contem) pHted trip. Now It Is reported that the Kurd· are uprising again. We don't like th« whey they do. Funny, but locomotives carried cowcatchers long before there were any milk trains. "Where le woman going?" asks the Rochester Poet Express; bless your soul, brother, she's coming! Baseball le a grand little amuse ment but even at that It Is not actual ly ^ne of the necessities of life. The lynching record 1· falling off. ι This may Indicate either that people < are getting better or lees energetlo. < About the only endless chain re maining is the arctlo rescuing party that goea after an arctlo rescuing Party. While doubts attack our souls, Would find Hope graciously supplying The strength we dally need In trying To reach the gleaming goals. If those who criticize were never Beset by any Ills whatever. CANDID OPINION. A wise man never makes the lame mistake twice, but the eupply of mis takes Is bo large that a wise man can make a lot without using any of them more than once. The most fortunate man Ll the world Is the man who Is henpecked and glad of It. One trouble about having a skeleton tn the closet Is that somebody la al ways leaving the door open. A good judge of men may have a plain wife who does unnecessary grumbling. Some women trust their husbands Implicitly. Borne husbands are bed ridden. There are miracle» even now. Once In a while a man who ts called on to make a speeô can remember his best story before he site down. One of the differences between con celt and self-confidence la that self-con fldence Is the result of training, ed ucation ami experience, while conceit 1b based on nothing and has no excuse for Its existence. A Terrible Predicament "My husband has threatened to eue me for divorce," sobbed the beautiful actress. "Cheer up," said her manager. "Nearly every actress has been sued for divorce." "I know, but think what the public will say. I have always tried to be all that a wife should be. Now no body will believe It." "If you're Innocent, why don't you light the case?" "That'· the trouble. I'm afraid It I fought the case they wouldn't give !itm the divorce." HE COULDN'T FORGET. "Do you r»nj»m | ber any of the re mark· that were made by the min ister last Sun day ?" asked Mr·. T. Wadd. "I thould say 1 did," her huiband rvyiiw. "What one·, for Instance?" " 'The morning offering will novr be -ecelved.' " CRITICI8M. "Did you enjoy Mise Doodleeon's singing last eve ning?" "Well, In a way, I did. But It seemed to me that she lacked a Bene· of proportion." ie», ι noticed that, too. A person as stout ae she Is ought to wear stripes ruDUlng up and down Instead of the other way." A Lost Opportunity. "Why §re you so sad?" "Mr*. Hawkins was burled today." "Was she?
