WAGE INCREASE
GIVEN THOUSANDS'
Biggest Increase in History of
United States Becomes
Effective Today.
New York, Dec. 15—-What is per
liapn the biggest wage increase In the
history of the United States becomes
effective today, when the pay of 250,
000 workers of the United States
Steel Corporation is Increased ten per I
cent—the gross annual increase ap- I
proximating $20,000,000. The in- |
crease was made by the company due j
to its enormous prosperity—Its net |
earnings are now estimated ut $1,000,
000 a day.
The increase Is but one of many
recently made by large employing
concerns throughout the country,
j Among them are:
Ten per cent increase to 35,000
'employes of the American Woolen
Company, Boston.
j Ten per cent increase to the 83,000 (
employes of the Cotton Manufactur
ers Association, of New Bedford,
i Thirty-five to forty per cent in
crease to the 32,000 persons employ
ed by the American Clothing Maufac
turers Association, New York. (Ef
fective December 18).
I Ten per cent Increase to the 3,000
employes of the National India Rub
ber Company, Bristol, R. I.
' Ten per cent Increase to the 3,000
men employed by independent steel ■
mills at and near Sharon, Pa.
Increase of not less than twenty- j
five cents a day to 10,000 employes;
of the Bayonne, Elizabeth and Clare- ι
mont refineries of the Standard Oil ·
Company. (Action taken after a strike
for higher wages at Bayonne, in
which several persons were shot to
death. )
The city of Now York contemplates
a -wage increase of $1,147,180 to 18,-1
488 municipal employes. This had j
not been determined finally.
In each case, In announcing the j
increases the concerns said they were ;
made to enable their employes to ;
meet the advancing cost of living. E. j
II. Gary, chairman of the steel cor-1
poration said: "Ordinarily the ques- |
! tion of wages would not come up for
consideration or decision at this time ;
of the year, but In consequence of
' the abnormal conditions now existing
, it has been decided to Increase the
ι wage rates of our Iron and steel com
' panies about ten per cent, effective
' December 15. As to the other depart- 1
' ments, increases will be equitably
> proportioned.
ι "The Increase is the third the com
1 pany has made during the year. Its
1 pay roll for 1915 was $176.800.864 the
I total will be above $200.000,000 and
, if high wages continue the 1917 roll
ι will approach $250.000,000."
» The Eastman Kodak Company of
' Rochester, Ν. Y., the Gtov·· Manufac
[ tuerers Association of Gloversville, N.
ι Y., and the Arlington Mills of Uaw
> rence, Mass, are other concerns which
' have made substantial wage in
creases.
That lesser concerns have taken
similar action is indicated by Chi
cago figures, where, according to John
W. O'Leary, president of the Chicago
Association of Commerce, twentv-flve
concerns have made $1.000,000 in
creases to 100,000 employes during
I the year
