WELL NOW FIGHT ΠΙ THE OPEN Attack Directed to Last Enemy Line Between English and Flat Country Around Menin—Huns Mowed Down by the Thousand London, Oct. 5.—"All of our objec tives have been gained, positions of great importance have been won and over 8,000 German prisoners already bave reached the collecting stations." This terse summary of the results of the great British drive on a nine mile front east of Ypres came from Field. Marshal Sir Douglas Haig. He adds: "We are now In possession of the main ridge up to a point 1,000 yards north of Broodseinde." The German line—the third of the great Hlndenburg system—was not "broken." What was left of it when the British Infantry went forward at dawn was literally lifted up and hurled back as a mass. Marshal Haig gained on an average of from one to one and a half miles on the entire nine mile front stormed. German units are surrendering In tact, overwhelmed by the unprecedent ed tonnage of shells from the British -uassed batteries and the deadly work of the British infantry with the bay onet. Before Zonnebeke three crack Ger man divisions, totaling 46,000 men, were engulfed and practically anni hilated. Field Marshal Haig is now attacking what Is supposed to be the last Ger- ! man line between the British and open country around Menin and Roulers. The British are only five or six miles from the Menin-Roulers railroad, which le the main supply line for this whole section of the German front. This railroad Is in easy reach of British artillery from their present positions, while British guns dominate the coun try between. For more than two weeks London has been anxiously awaiting just such an announcement as was made by Gen eral Frederick B. Maurice, director of operations. Capture All Objectives. "British troops captured all their ob jectives on a front of 16,000 yards, reaching a maximum of 2,260 yards," reads the official War Office statement. "Broodselne is one of the villages cap tured. Both the first and second ob jectives on the Passchendaele-Ghelu- ■ velt ridge have been taken." Marshal Halg's report from field headquarters was brief. It read: ! "East of Ypres we attacked this morning on a wide front, with satis factory progress. A number of prison 3rs havs already been taken."
