NEW AUTO LAW
IS EFFECTIVE
Auto Dealers and Purchasers
of Cars Are Affected by
Statute
A new law of much Importance to
hutomoblle dealers and to every one
Belling or purchasing motor cars of
every description went Into effect In
this state yesterday. The law Is de
signed principally to do away with
the selling to an unsuspecting public,
Stolen motor cars, and to do away
with the stealing of cars If thlR Is pos
s *lblo. As there are many persons
trading In automobiles in this city whi
must make their future sales conforn
to the new law it la quoted in full ai
follows: *
"The term 'motor vehicle,’ as usee
In this act shall Include all wheelee
vehicles operated or propelled by anj
form of engine motor or mechanica
power, and shall embrace new 01
used motor vehicles. The term ‘man
ufacturer's bill of sale’ as used In thli
act shall mean the original bill of sab
issued by the manufacturer of th<
motor vehicle or his agent, or a dupli
cate thereof Issued toy the manufac
turer or his agent The term 'manu
facturer’s number’ shall mean th<
manufacturer's original number af
fixed to or imprinted upon the engin<
or motor of the motor vehicle.
“It shall be unlawful to sell or pur
chase any motor vehicle except In th«
manner and subject to the condition!
hereinafter provided.
"No motor vehicle shall be sold 01
purchased unless it contains th«
manufacturer's number, nor shal

i there be a sale or purchase of a motor
i vehicle containing an obliterated,
i erased or mutilated manufacturer’s
number.
"In all sales or purchases of a mo
[ tor vehicle directly from the manu
facturer or through an agent or
' agency of such manufacturer there
• shall be iseued to the purchaser a
manufacturer's bill of sale, which bill
i of sale shall contain the manufactur
i er's number on the engine or motor
of the motor vehicle so sold.
"In ail other sales of purchases of
motor vehicles the original bill of sale
shall be assigned by the seller to the
purchaser by an assignment witness
ed by two persons and acknowledged
by the seller before a notary public.
All such assignments shall at all times
be kept and attached to the original
manufacturer's bill of sale; provided,
however, that in event the said motor
vehicle was purchased from the man
ufacturer or his agent prior to the
going into effect of this act, then, In
stead of assigning the original bill,

the seller shall execute a new bill of
sale, witnessed by two persons, and
acknowledged before a notary public.
"Any person violating any of the
provisions of this act shall be deemed
guilty of a misdemeanor and upon
conviction thereof shall be punished
' by a fine not to exceed two thousand
I dollars or by imprisonment not to ex
: ceed two years or both, at the discre
tion of the court.’’
The act waa approved April 15 of
thia year.

Taka Over Woodbridge-Rah
way Road at Meeting of
the Freeholders
NEW BRUNSWICK, July 5—At the
request of the State Highway Com
mission. the County Board of Free
holders have taken over the Wood
bridge-Rahway road as a county high
way.
This road is now bein.i repaired at
the expense of the state, and as soon
as repairs are approved the road will
be under the jurisdiction of the coun
ty. The part of the road taken over
extends from the Weodbridge- Roose
velt road to the Union county line.
Freeholder Clarence M. Haight Intro
duced the resolution authorising the
acceptance of the road.
A resolution presented by Freehold
er J. Edgar Bennett calls for the Im
mediate repair by the Pennsylvania
Railroad Company of the bridge on
the South River-Cranbury turnpike,
between Dayton and Jameaburg. This
bridge has been reported as danger
ous and unsafe, by members of the
board.
A new road la now being laid at this
point and It Is the desire of the free
holders that the bridge be repaired at
the same time the new road surface is
being laid.
Clerk of the Board Thomas H. Mul
vlhill will notify the railroad company
to make the needed repairs and also
widen to conform to the road width.
The monthly report of Nathgn Rob
bins, county superintendent of weights
and measures, was read, showing that
813 weights and measures had been
inspected, three of which were found
incorrect. Those found incorrect
were condemned.

the State Highway Commission, ad
vising the freeholders of the change
in the date of the hearing for appor
tioning of state vehicle moneys. July
