BARDEN CARD PARTY
SUCCESS AT SO. AMBOY
SOUTH AMBOY, July 8.—Not
even the warmest weather of the
leason could mar the pleasure and
success of the garden card party
given last night under the auspices
of the Women’s Auxiliary of the
Memorial Hospital, on the lawn ad
joining the home of Mrs. A. W.
Christian!. The splendid amount of
$115 was cleared as the net pro
ceeds although no tickets were sold
In advance and the party Itself was
enjoyable in every detail.
Cards began at 7 o’clock and last
ed until 10:30, the guests playing
Under the lights of large lights placed
about the lawn. P. J. Dwyer won the
door prize and In the contests of the
evening, a card table was won by
Robert Kerry, Jr„ and a cake by
Charles Safran, who also won the
non-player's prize. Prizes were
awarded at each table In the games
as follows:

Laying of Paving in Business
Section Will Start in a
Short Time.
[By Evening News Correspondent.]
KEYPORT, July 8.—A concrete
mixer has been placed at the corner
of Broad and Front streets In the
section to be concreted by the State
Highway Commission which gives
the impression that work of laying
the road In the business section of
the borough will begin shortly. The
business block between Broad and
Main streets has been torn up for the
past month or more and it is almost
Impossible to cross the street except
it the Broad street corner.
Prior to beginning work the con
tractor stated that at no time would
the business section be closed to lo
cal traffic. However, for the past
month the street on both sides has
been dug up and impassable. The
merchants of the borough have com
plained to the borough council and
showed accounts proving that busi
ness has been very much less than at
the same period last season, and the
merchants place the entire blame on
the fact that the street is not com
pleted.
The borough has had all work
completed long ago, the water lat
erals are laid, the trolley track re
placed and the curbs reset all In
compliance with the demands made
by the commission and the contrac
tor before work was begun here.
The business men ask that the
block be completed thus enabling
patrons to cross to the various stores
as Is the usual custom. The work
on the county Job of rebuilding Front
street from Broad along Church and
down Second to Walnut street Is
rapidly progressing and a part of the
street is already open to traffic. This
work was not started until long /ifter
Front street under the State High
way Commission was dug up.
Mayor Mason and Borough Attor
ney Arthur S. Van Buskirk. have
been assured by Engineer Moore
that he would do all in his power
to have the work begun Immediately

agement is felt at the presence of
the cement mixer.

PLAYGROUND ACTIVITIES
On Friday, July 15, each of the
playgrounds of the city will hold a
pet show. The children will bring
their pets to the grounds, where
the show will be put on in regular
grown up horse and dog show style.
Judges will be on hand to decide
the merit* of the various entries and
prizes of blue, red and white ribbons
will be awarded to the three best ex
hibits In each of the classes. Dur
ing the early part of the following
week the winners from the play
grounds will exhibit their pets and
the best pet In the city will be pick
ed.
Proficiency In athletic* will be re
warded in the middle of next week
when the playground badge tests
are scheduled to start. Every boy
and girl has a chance to win one
of the Playground and Recreation
Association badges which will be
given for special ability In the , dif
ferent branches of sport.
Water sports and instruction In
swimming are to be a part of the
activities of the playgrounds, ac
cording to present plana of Super
visor Moench.
Four volley ball leagues, contain
ing'In all about twenty teams, will
begin competition early next week.
There will be leagues for young
sters and older girls and for youngeri
and older boys.
The second edition of Dust and
Dirt, the official playground organ,
will resume publication next week.
Saturday will see the organization
of the playground council, compris
ing elected members of each play
ground who will meet frequently and
formulate rules and regulations for
the care of the grounds.
New records are being puchased
for the folk dancing which Is an
important feature of the work ol
the girls.
Street commissioners will also be
elected soon.
