Charges Senator Heflin With
Inviting Class Hatred on
Tax Legislation

WASHINGTON. July 15.—Sens
tor Waller K. Kdge of New Jersey.
In the senate yesterday charged Sen
ator Heflin, of Alabama, with Invit
ing class hatred throughout the
United States after the Alabama aen
ator had delivered a vicious criticism
of the Republican majority for plan
ning to pass tax legislation and tar
iff revision to benefit the moneyed
lasses but blocking passage of the
bonus bll| to aid the former soldiers.
The Republican majority, Heflin
charged, would yield to the "tariff
barons" who wanted a high tariff,
and the “excess profits millionaires”
who wanted Income taxes revised,
but would turn a deaf ear to the
soldiers.
“When this country, or the senate,
or a member thereof, invites class
distinction, or endeavors to array one
type of citizen against another, aa the
tirade of which the senator from
Alabama has Just relieved himself. Is
calculated to do," replied Sonator
Edge, "he is simply inviting natural
and Inevitable disaster to the country
and every class of our citizens."
"The senator from New Jersey Is
in the millionaire club himself,” Hef
In shot back at Edge.
Senator Edge disregarded the re
tort and repeated his advice given
the senate last Monday to drop every,
thing else and take up rearrange
ment of the taxes and revenue in or
der to restore confidence throughout
the country.

Edge ."to even infer that a small
payment of fifty dollars a year for
three or four years would be of any
particular financial advantage to
them or any direct permanent ben
efit to them If the buslneaa of the
country was stagnated and they
were unemployed.
"Prosperity alone in the past
years has made it possible for us
to do the things that have made this
country great. I repeat that the
greatest service we can do the sol
diers is to put them to work, which
can be done only by revising taxes
and tariffs and creating prosperity.
"What good Is a temporary bonus

ed After we are all through with
this special session. If we have not
accomplished these things which
I will bring hack confidence to the
country, so that men can do things,
so that men will be employed, even
If we rasa a doxen bonus bills we
will have failed :n our duty to the
soldiers and to every class of cttl -

"The senate should drop discus
sion of soldier bonus and evety
thlng else and take up rearrange
ment of the taxes and revenue con
ditions In the country in "order to
restore confidence to the people.”

LAUNCH NEW BATTLESHIP -
EARLY NEXT MONTH
WASHINGTON, July 15.—The
Washington, the third American bat
tleship with electric driven installa
tion will be launched at Camden
early in September, the navy depart
ment announced today. She is the
fourth ship to bear the name. The
new Washington is a sister ship of
the Maryland, which is expected
will be turned over to the navy In
August, and the Colorado and West
Virginia, all mounting sixteen-inch
guns.
Miss Jean Summers, daughter of
Congressman J. W. Summers, of
Walla Walla, Wash., will be sponsor
when the new craft Is launched.
The Washington, being built by the
New York Shipbuilding Corporation,
has • displacement of 32,100 tons, is
024 feet long, and 17 feet In beam.
Her four propellora driven by
43,000 horse-power motors, supplied
with power from 218,000 horse
power turbine generators, are ex
pected to give a speed of 21 knots.
She is an oil burner, and probably
will be assigned to the Pacific fleet.
