; “MIN,” LYING ALONG ROID, I PROVES TO BE SCARE-CROW IBy Evening News Correspondent.] HELiMETTA, Aug. 19—Chief of Police C. Oscar Ericson, while on his way home from New Brun^wi^k last night in an automobile, experi enced a real thrill. He was speeding along .thinking perhaps of his European trip that he wi’l commence on Saturday next when ho almost ran O 'er the pn s trate form of a "man" lying face down In the roadway. Thinking perhaps that the unfortunate person was the victim of some hold-up man or had been killed by an autoist, he lammed cn the emergency brakes spent Wednesday at Asbury Park when he attended the meeting of the Jr. O. U. A. M. convention. Miss Mable Ackerman, of Osborn street visited with friends who are patients at St Peter's hospital, New Brunswick on Thursday. The united Sunday school excur sions to Asbury Park held on Wed nesday was well patronized. The First Baptist and Calvary M. K. Sunday schools united with other schools along the shore route, mak ing the event a great financial sue cess. The gutters on Osborn street are being filled in with cracked shells and cinders. The heavy rains for the past few week has badly washed out the gutters, particularly those on the west side of the street. One of the attendants on a large truck filled with crated chickens fell from the top of the truck on the Keyport side of the Matawan creek bridge at West Keyport on Wednesday and received severe bruises. The man was struck by one of the trolley span wires over the state road. Dr. S. H. Cassidy was the attending physician. William A. Tilton, of Osborn street, is enjoying a few days vaca tion spent at Atlantic City and Mill ville. Lincoln Hose Company took a number of their friends to Asbury Park on Wednesday to witness the parade of the Junior Order of the i'nited American Mechanics, making the trip on their fire truck. Among the guests were the members of the Ladies Auxiliary. The Princes Bay Yacht Club will entertain the members of the Key port Tacht Club on Saturday after noon, when races will bs the feat ure. Boats will be provided at the local club tor those who wish to make the trip. Miss Margaret Bedle, of Osborn street, has returned from a few days spent at Camp Karitan, Point Pleas ant. Miss Geneva Bailey, of Broadway, is a patient in St. Peter’s hospital. New Brunswick, where she was op erated upon for appendicitis. Mrs. Sarah Camp and grand daughter, Miss Clara Camp, are enjoying several days at Asbury Park, where they are the guests of relatives. S. E. Tilton ,of Flatbush, is the guest of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William A. Tilton, of Osborn street, for the balance of the week. Miss Vienna Bedle, of Osborn street, is making an extended stay with relatives at Engllshtown. Clifford Morrell, of Second street, was the guest of friends at Asbury Park on Thursday. FIRE DESTROYS HELMETTA STORE; MAN FALLS IN WELL [By Evening News Correspondent.] HELMETTA. Aug. 19.—Fire of a mysterious origin completely destroy ed the large stor* building, owned by Harry Handel, of New Brunswick, early yesterday morning and threat ened the store of Meyer Shavlnski, a merchant across the street. Prompt work on the part of the local firemen saved surrounding buildings from de struction. In the building at the time was a large stock of general merchandise and the loss is estimated at $6,000, with a small Insurance. The damage to the Shavinski building was con fined to the front and roof of the building. Handel, the owner of'the burned building, resides at New Brunswick, coming here daily. He left shortly aft<r 11 o'clock Wednesday night and several hours later the fire wai discovered by passers-by. The fire started down stairs In the main store adjoining the dwelling portion and before the firemen could get to wor» the frame structure was beyond l saving. When Handel was notified of the fire he rushed to the scene of his business and fell unconscious, be moaning his loss. He can give no reason for the fire. Excitement accompanied the fight ing of the flames among the firemen when one of the firemen. John Men doker fell into a well on the Shavin ski premises across the street and his fellow firemen turned their at tention to his rescue that was ac complished before any serious harm was done to him. Charles Whit kowski, another firefighter was sev erely burned about the arms In fight ing the flames.
