Van Ness at the polls Tuesday may well be regarded as the hand writing on the wall by .Republicans with an eye to the election of a gov ernor next year, intimates Republl- ; can State Chairman E. C. Stokes in a statement on the election made public today. Airs. Van Ness was the sponsor of! ihe drastic state prohibition enforce- j ment act which hears her name, and J she was the only Republican out off Ihe county's twelve candidates who | failed of election Tuesday. That the Party had beat be a little careful of | its relations with the Anti-Saloon , League is the plain meaning of the ex-governor’s statement. ’The defeat of Mrs. Van Ness was not a personal defeat." says Mr. Stokes. "The vote in this connection It most significant, and contains a‘ warning, and this is especially signi ficant in view of Ihe weakness of the Democratic organization and the vote for the labor ticket. If the lat ter had not been in the field the re sult in Essex might have been dif ferent. f>nly the blind ran fail to realize that a large number of Re publicans voted against our ticket , for a reason that is most manifest.” Republicans should not rest on their oars, it would seem, from the following sentence of the Republi can chieftain which is underscored: "The Republican victory was due nor* to the hop* of what the Re mblican party will do rather than hrough the approval of what It has lone.” Referring to national affairs thr eader says “If the revenue bill, *s >a«sed by the senate, la not atro ious, It is certainly far from fulflll ng Republican pledges.” He goes in to sav that "It is to he hoped that he House of Representatives will ifford some relief and save the Re >ublican party from what wltt be a landienp in next year's campaign.” Yew Phosphate Increases Weight and Strength of Frail People in Two Weeks Time in Many Instances.
