old Sam Pretino swung his club and
made a motion to give puisoit to a
youngster who was cutting the cor
ner on the park grass before he
turned to answer the question.
“Being the oldest policeman in the
world is a ‘pipc.f ’* lie said, twirling
the mace.
‘All you have to do is to shoot the
kids oii’ii the pausy beds here m
the park in the summer, and to see
that none of them young fellers gits
too fresh with the girls that parade
the streets in these now short
skirts."
Sam’s been listed on the police
roster here lor so long that even offi
cials themselves can't remember
when he started.
Ltiirn in Jersey
Sam1 was born in 1824 in the an
cient fishing village of Barnegat, N.
J. With him, being a policeman is
an avocation. He started as a plain
clothesinan in the government secret
service at the time of the St. Louis
whisky ring before the Civil War.
Sam. pounding the wall with his
club to emphasize his remarks, says:
“In i 8G1 r was Lincoln’s personal
bodyguard on the way from Illinois
to Washington for the inaugura
tion.’’
Daring to have that statement
questioned and have it pointed out
that if all such claims were true,
Lincoln must have had 0,000 body
guards. Sam assumes an air of in
jured dignity.
Sprinter. Too
“I was a champion sprinter in my
time, too." he adds. "Lincoln once
said to me: ‘Well, Sam, you can
run faster than I can, but i can
split more rails than you.* But l
don’t suppose you believe that,
either."
Sam says he went into the north
west first, in 1858 to watch for poach
ing Canadian trappers. Now ho has
switched to watching for mashers.

badge?" He displayed it proudly.
‘•Twenty-three! That don’t mean
anything special for me, for I’m go
ing to live a long time yet. But it
means ’git’ for them young masher
fellers."
