Maurice Costello Hetnms to Screen
The recent return to the screen of
Maurice Costello in the new Sew
nick Special. "Conceit.-' was marked
hy an incident that threatened to
delav his appearance on "location"
for quite a time. If not to prevent
■
his working In the production alto
I aether.
It appears that Mr. Costello and
1 rat Hartlgan. while In Banff. Can
ids. fell Into a conversation with a
stranger. Later the stranger was
irrested and charged with shooting
deer in the Canadian National Park
Mr. Costello and Mr. Hartlgan hav
' ing been observed in conversation
with the stranger, were held in cus
tody as material witnesses.
Despite the protests of Director
Burton George, the police invited
them to tell their troubles to the
judge. It took the combined elo
quence of the entire company to
effect the release of Messrs. Costello
and Hartigan.
In "Conceit.” Maurice Costello
marks his return to the screen after
an absence of several years. He
will be recalled as having been one
of the very first screen stars, if not
the first known by name to the
rapidly growing motion picture
clientele. He war with Ralph lnce
at the Vltagraph for several years
and has played practically every
type of character imaginable. In
"Conceit." which comes to the Cres
oent Theatre tomorrow. Friday and
Saturday. Mr. Costello portrays the
role of Barbe He Fleche, a half
--
breed Indian trapper.
The program also contains the
usual big high class vaudeville

photoplay. "A Tale of Two Worlds.”
and six big headline acts of Broad
way vaudeville.
“Orphans of ll»c Storm” Hit at
IHtmas
D. W. Griffith's ''Orphans of the
Storm." based on the well-known
stage play, "The Two Orphans,” and
and released through United Artists'
Corporation, continues as the mecca
of popular interest at the Dltmas
theatre where overflowing crowds
dally express their delight by ap
plause, laughter and tears. Among
the crowds are not a few who saw
this screen epic when the engage
ment first began, but come back to
enjoy more of its beauties.
The canvas is so vast and the fig
ures so numerous, colorful and Inter
esting that the work improves on the
second seeing. The gorgeous tapes
try is more skillfully woven with the
heart-stirring, the grotesque, the
lovely and the comic side by side in
harmonious wealth of detail. It is
ntoh detail, as well as the re-sought
ihrill. that causes "Orphans of the
Storm” enthusiasts to come again
inti again.
Always predominantly remains the
picture of Henriette and I.ouise, the
loveliest bit of genre on the whole
mighty canvas. The Misses I.llllan
md Dorothy Gish In these characters
loseph Schildkraut as Henrlette’s
lover, and Monte Blue as Henrlette's
rescuer In the famous cavalry ride,
rontinue their great hits.
New material In the wild Carmag
nole dances and the new fooling
py Creighton Hale and Porter
strong in the comic roles add liuge
ly to the mirth of the comic inter
ludes.
