PROGRESSIVES ARE COMING
J BACK TO THE G. 0. P.
Chief of recent political events in the West was
the, conference held in Chicago by the Kopnblican
"Chairman from six States. All of them reported
encouraging conditions in their States, saying the
members who had strayed away in the wake of the
Bull Moose movement were returning to the old col
ors. This applies only to the rank and file.
The leaders those who have barred themselves
from the .Republican ranks and, what is of more
vital interest to them, from. public office at the
hands of Republican voters are still off the reser
vation, shouting that the Republicans must come to
them. Former Governor Churl es S. Deneen, dis
cussing this plase of the situation, dubbed these
leaders the "Democratic Aid Society."
He declared his unfaltering belief in a protective
tariff and added : "The Republican party has ever
been, and is now, a progressive party, but it stands
for progress as conditions arise; progress based on
sanity, not on hysteria flavored with demagogy. "We
are trying the President's Democratic policy. If
you like it, choose a Democratic House' in Novem
ber next. If you don't like it, return a Republican
House that will tie the hands of the President in
dictating further destructive legislation."
' THE UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE.
The one universal language is not Esperanto but
music. Everywhere the same musical score is play,
ed. The masters of 'ditVercnt countries may have
characteristic national qualities, but music lovers
everywhere find delight in a composition, it mat
ters not from what land or clime the composer
hails. AVhether played in Germany or Italy or
France or at home, your favorite music soirnds the
same. Leslie s Weekly.
The first London "beat." since the inauguration
of war was Lord NorthcliflVs livening News story
that there had been an engagement in the North
Sea. One difference between Lord Northcliffe and
a few American yellow journalists is that he had a
grace to make an abject apology for the fake.
Courier-Journal.
No doubt the many Americans who are now in the
war zone abroad, regret that they did not remain
Hi home and "See America First" and enjoy seen-
V cry that is said to be grander. than any in foreign
h countries, as well as spend their money at home.
Kentucky Elk.
The San Francisco Chronicle regards the Pres
ident's views on business depression as an example
of the danger of entrusting great power to theorists
who have had ho useful practical experience.
"Well, tlfey'll be needing me," says the Ken
ducky mule, as he reads the war news. There hasn't
.been a war since the time of Cyrus when mules were
Viiot in demand. Frankfort State Journal.
A leading Boston broker is in receipt of a letter
from one of his customers telling him that business
is picking up. The customer is engaged in manu-
cloth for coffin linings.

Mexico, which a few weeks ago was a bristling
cactus field of trouble, is now a veritable "Peaceful
Valley," compared with the cultured capitals of
war-rent Europe.
OUT THEM OPi1!
One of our Kentucky exchanges 'remarks that it
has no respect for a person who will take a paper
for years and then kick when asked to pay up the
subscription. For our part, we do not believe that
any publisher should continue sending a paper for
years to a non-paying subscriber. Really it is not
good business lo send out any paper that has not
been paid for in advance, and if credit is extended
to subscribers it should not be for a period longer
than one year. If the subscriber does not pay in a
year the presumption is strong that he does not
intend to pay at all unless under strenuous methodf.
of persuasion. Thereupon ho, ought to be cut oft"
the list on the theory that it is better for the pa
per to lose one dollar than to risk losing several
dollars in the effort to retain a subscriber at doubt
ful paying disposition. Frankfort Stale JournaL
FOR BELGIAN INDEPENDENCE.
"What ever views Ave may hold of the responsi
bility for the European conflict all must recognize
that Belgian by its defense of Liege has established
its independence.
Liege may fall, must fall, as it appears at this
distance from the conflict, but after all the battles
are over, and the Peace Conference of the World
vis held, the first proposition before the Parliament
of man will be lo establish and maintain the inde
pendence of Belgium, who dared to risk everything
on one battle in defense of one city assailed by an
ally who had turned invader.
He either fears his fate too much,
Or his deserts are small,
That dares not put it to the touch,
To gain or lose it all.
Frankfort State Journal.
MAKE DATE WITH OPPORTUNITY.
While Europeans are murdering each other like
maniacs let loose, we can go after the business
they are thus deserting in Asia and South America
and by a grand rush gain the leadership during
generations to come.
Opportunity knocks loudly at Uncle Sam's
gate.
Go to it, everybody! Make H pass its bene
fits around. Cincinnati Post.
MUST BE SCARED, SAM.
Far be it from us to say so, but now would be a
good time to clean out the ditches and pull the
weeds before thev go to seed. Dover News.
