The report was generally din- credited an no one was readv to believe that a man who bad been honored with the nomination for the higeat ollice that the County can elret would be guilty of disgracing the Jtrint and confidence placed in biio. We determined on hearing the charge repeated to find out the truth of the statement, am? learned of a number of people in New Lexington who had actual ly witnessed the affair. We went to New Lexington and called on George Have, wbo it wax Haid was an eye witness. We asked Mr.Ilayes if he saw Frsuk McKeuna playing cards in a Somerset Saloon the Thursday before. Mr. Hayes. Yes, I went into a saloon in Somerset on the day of the Republican County Convention with a number of others and saw Frank McKenna and three color oil men, (here lie named the parlies) sitting at a table .playing cards. I don't know bow long they bad been playing before I saw tbcui. I remained about a half an hour. After excu sing ourself for interrupting him, we told him that w had learned that Frank Mc Kenna had beu gambling in a Somerset saloon on the 25 lb J of August, the day of tba Republican county convention, aud that I bad been told be witnessed it. Ribbins al Dittoes. We occasionally bear of a "late day Democrat," finding fault with us because we diSer with the teachings of the De mocracy. We have the greatest respect for our old Democratic fronds and their principles. We stond shoulder to uhoul der in the darkest hours of the party, when the timid of our ranks deserted through fear. We published the Demo cratic Union, now called the New Lexing ton Herald, when it was necessary for us and some of the old tried and true Demo crats to watch the ollice every night. Threats to mob us on the street "were com mon, and we had good reason for believing that the threats were not idle talk as the scars on others are living witnesses to prove they have been foully dealt with. By who? J!y the same "late day Demo crats" who have been vilifying us on ac count of our political belief. The Knijjhts of Labor of Shawnee have ju-t cause to feel proud of the magnificient " structure they are erecting and will soon have completed. It is not a "yliell" of a building but a massive brick structure built of tbe best of material and by me chanics. The locality is the finest in the City and about tbe tirnt thing to attract the eyi ifter reaching Main Street. The building is about 80x35 feet and three stories high. The first story ia to bej oc cupied by Dry Goods House; the second is the Opera House and the third the Hall of the Knights of Labor. This magnifi cent building is a monument erected by the sweat of intelligent laboring men. liy men who earn their living by the sweat of their brow. No mortgage hangs over it, but every dollar is paid as the work pro gresses, and as soon as the last nail is driven the mechanic will receive the last cent of the cost of the building. Skirte at Dittoes. The Fair. The fair opened last Wednesday and the weather could not have been more favora ble. There was one great draw back; o ir farmers; wore all .busy getting in their wheat, On Wednesday evening the buildings were pretty well taken up. Flor al Hall presented a finer appearance than ever before. The entries in this building were large and some very costly paintings were on exhibition, Agricultural Hall was also well filled and the display of fruits and vegetables was far better than was anticipated this season. The Dis play of machinery was of the very best and was large. Among the articles we saw here was a feed rack for feeding sheep indoors. Mr. A. R. Yrost is the inventor and has applied for a patent. Sheep men pronounce it the best and most economical rack they ever saw. The live stock department was yery large The entries on horses was the largest ever made at this fair. The display of Cattle, Hogs, Sheep, &c, was all good. The racing was good. Some very fine horses taking part and were evenly mated The drivers however had the pins set up and were ready to throw tbe race any way that it could be made pay. Every thing passed off quietly and all enjoyed themselves. We will as soon as the award of premiums is made out pub lish it. BALTIMORE ORIOLE. Interesting- Detail of the Programme Prepared by the Monnmental lty for the Mardi Grns and Carni val in October. The success of the Baltimore's big cele bration last year exhuberated her citizens and in mastering all its manifold details so perfectly, gained an experience whi tbis year will be turned to the best possi ble account. The Oriole celebration this coming October will be an immense thing. Funds ample ta meet every requirement having been freely subsribed and placed at the disposal oi those haqing the affair in charge. In most respects the order of things will be entirely eiffurent from last year, and in the way of gorgeous and novel features there will be no comparison be tween the two celebrations. For years the desire has been intense to witness a genu ine Mardi Orrs parade without being fore-. ed to go upou a journey of thousands of miles. The fame of New Orleans, Mem phis and Mobile as the centres of Mardi (irasand Carnival festivities has spread throughout the entire country, and when it is promised that Baltimore shail equal if not indeed surpass the greatest efforts of any the cities named it means much Contracts have already been let for the mystic pageant, the subject illustrated in an extensive scries of tableaux to remain a dead secret until the night of the Mard Graa. Mr. De Leon, the gentleman who has designed and perfected the mystic features, has had ample experience, hav ing been at the head of similar undertak ings in New Orleans and Mobile. Balti more pays him $10,000 for this special feature, but this represents by no means the whole of the pageant. As much not more, will be expended in other series of tableaux, some of them designed and prapared by the different societies of the city, and others gotten up under the im mediate direction of the general commit tee. An entirely Jnew departure in this sort of pnrsde will be the use of platform cars upon which the tableaux will be con structed and which will be run over tbe street csr tracks. It is estimated that the pageant will reach a length of three miles, and under electric, calcium and other bril liant lights, will preeent a scene to be wit nessed hut once in a lifetime. The Mardi Gras will, however, be but one of the great events of three days festivities. On Mon day, the 10th, the new water works nre to be formally opened with a beautiful dis play by fountains and all that sort of thinga In the afternoon the grand daylight para'e is to occur and will without doubt eclipse the big parade day of last year, and to do that it will indeed be great. In addition to the millitary of Baltimore anil adjacent cities, it is expected that several of the military organizations en route to York town will stop over and participate. Aside from the soldier boys, there will be grand display by Firo Departments, Masonic Odd Fellows Knights of Pythias and other organizations. At night, the glorious Or atorio with its almost couotlesg voices: Tuesday morning is set apart for the re ception of the French visitors, and among them, the immediate deeendents of Lafay ette, De Barras, De Groasd, De Rocham beaux, and other great Frenchmen who flayed so grand a part as the allies of Washington during the revolution. With them will come many of the most distin guished men of the French republic; states men, generals add naval officers. Two men-of-war, fully manned, are now on the sea bound for the Chesapeake; and Balt'i more's wellcome to her illustrious guests will be a memoroble one. Wednesday will witness new honors to the French, and a general series of receptions to all visitors throughout the city. At night comes the glorious Mask and Carnival with all its merry features, its eccentric costuming and brilliant details. It will be a happy wind up to the three days' pleasures, and if all comers do not have the jolliest time of their lives none will be blamed for it but themselves. The B. & O., with its accus tomed enterprise and liberality, has joined in the full spirit of the celebration and an nounces a rate of one half the regular fare from all stations on the main line, divis ions on the main line, divisions and branches. Tickets are to be good for ten days, thus affording ; am pie time for all As is well known, Baltimore has an abun dance of hotels, boarding houses and like places 01 comiort, ana no extra charge whatever will be made for accommodations d,uring the Oriole celebration. Nothing will be spared to make the occasion the happiest imaginable. Baltimore people knowing full well that to fail in proving her claim to be the most hospitable city in the country, would leave a stain upon her fair fame and name time could never bloi out. The New Lexington Herald has repeatedly charged me with voting for an able bodied colored man in preference to a crippled soldier in the General Assembly. No such vote was ever cast by me and furthermore no such elec tion was held.
