"You hflve one of the best husbands, the handsomest house, and the prettiest location in our beautiful cily. But how is llns," mid the laughing girl b:camr serious with deep anxiety; "tears when I expected laughter; what can be the matter? What have I said? Emil ie, dear Emilie, are you not happy?" The young wife made no reply, but bowed her head upon the shoulder of her sympathizing friend, and indulged in a long and passionate flow of tears. "Oh thank you, thank you, dear husband," cried Emilie in the fulness of her heart, "you will never smoke any more, will you?" and her soft pleading eyes were raised to him with an expression that amply repaid him for the sacrifice. Days passed, and the young wife felt happier than she had ever felt before, fur her heart's idol had relinquished even his favorite cigars, and for her sake . . One evenig, as he sat. byherside, she thought he seemed unusually depressed, and her cheerful smile and her animated conversation failed to restore his wonted gaiety. She did not ask the cau.-e, but she almost felt as if she had been selfish in exacting such a sacrifice as she knew it to be. At length he arose. "Emilie, I think I must have a cigar." No word of fond entreaty stayed his course, and he soon returned. "I have got only one bunch, thev will soon be p-nnp unit then T till smoke no more. He was about to retire to Ins studin. whora he generally indulged in the luxury of smoking, but a soft tone recalled him, "will you not stay with me?" , . . "I thought," said he, hesitatingly, 'I thought smoke was very disagreeable to you." "It will be still more disagreeable if it deprive me of my hu-baiid's company, "said Emilie as she gently drew him back into the room, and placing a luxurious rocking chair for his reception, seated herself by his side. She then selected two cigats from the lot, light ed one and placed it to her husband's lips, and pcriormiig the same operation with the other, commenced puffing nway with the gravity of an experienced smoker Bolh maintained the same imperturable coolness for several miiiutes; he looked every instant to see her give up the attempt, and she still smoking as if it had been a habit of years. I soon recognized her as being the Mrs. Ellison, of whom you have spoken as being so kind to you when a child. She is in extreme povnty, and of course feels it more after a life of affluence. Now you remember that pretty little while cottage near oui country residence; it is to rent, very fyw, only fifty dollars, and is plenty large enough for Mrs. EllNon and her little girl. Now our cigar money would hire it for her, and the remaining thirty-seven dollars and sixty cents would be some reliel to her. Then she will be so near that e can run in at any lime, and see that she is comfortable. What do you think, dear est, of my little? plan?" "1 tbiiik my w ife is quite an economist, hut I was so engaged listening to tint earnest tone, that I have not understood it all. We must go and see Mrs. Ellison to-mciiTotv, and she shall certainly " never w iot " "Come, now, Estelle, quit this nonsense, and I will tell you. I believe I am growing jealous. You know I always disliked smoking, but I cannot persuade him to leave off. I am beginning to think that he loves Ins cigar better than he docs me, or he could not rcsL-t my persuasions." "But you must coax him." "I have." "Well, you must keep coaxing him." "It is no use." 'Did you say 'My dear husband?'" Emilie laughed and wai silent. "Did you say -Ah ilvV " "Yes but he said 'Ah no.'' In truth, I begin to think he does not like to be coaxed " "Nonsense! you never saw a being yet that did not Now, I will tell you what (o do. I know when he comes, you always run to meet him and he kisses you. Don't blush so, it is all a matter of lad Xo.v to-day hen he comes just say to him, My dear, the smell oi' smoke ij very disagrcablc to me; I shall not let you kiss me any more til 4 2 j you leave it ofl ' Will you say this'" 20 7 j ..j ,v j lllillk .,j(,u itj.. It was strange how such a tritle bad become so ncccssaiy to her happiness. She looked at her work basket to see if there were any thing which mibt divert her thoughts. There was a doll whi. h she wa dressing for the lair i.f the Female Charitable Society, but the satin pauzc seemed perlectly uutractahle they diJ not look well, and that never changing smile on the face was more than she could endure. She flung it hack again, and heaped up the muslins, laces and bits of ribbon in m .st unwonted confu sion as if to hide it. She ui.hed she had taken some more useiul work; if it had been a frock for some poor w iman or little ragged girl, it would have fixed her attention. Then she wound up her musical box, hut she could not bear its sounds, and was glul w hen it ceased. Even the pages of a favorite periodical w hich had jusl been laid upon the table, were not devoured with eagerness as usual, and her little pet, Juan, lay at his mistress' feet, as if he had no customary cares to bestow. The truth was, her womanly pride was aroused, and even in her solitude she sat li.ilessly thus in that utter I meliiiess of spirit w hich dreads com munion with it-tlt. Mie was glad when a well known tap announced her friend Estelle, and started up with a smile to return her aircctionute greeting. "Well, sister," (they were used to call each other sister,) "I thought I would just run over and see what was the result of your experiment. Did you say what 1 told you.'" "I did."' "Abd what did your husband say?" "He said, 'Very well, my dear, then you can go without your kiss.' " "But what can Ido?"said Emilie, despaiiiogly; "I like my ki.-s as well as he does, and of course I cannot now take back what I have said?" Estelle felt at that moment as if she wo lid never advise any one again, hut she smiled as she said, "Then persevere, my fiiend, and a few days will show the result. If you succeed, think how much more pleasant it will be to have the kisses without the smell of tobacco, and I will give you as many as you wish in the mean time," she roguishly added, covering the cheek and lips and brow ol her friend, with those eloquent testimonials of affection. CHAPTER III. Mrs. Reed Williams had never looked more beautiful thau the did that evening when her hus band returned. Perhaps there had been more than usual solicitude about the shade of ribbon or the adjustment of curl, but if there was, looking glasses tell no talcs, and neat and plain attire would not proclaim the fact to an ordinary obser ver. She started nervously as he entered, but she controlled herself and greeted him kindly aud calmly as usual. ROMANCE IN REAL LIFE. HV I.AI'lttK T I n. "Married, on Tuesday," (not last) "by the Tier. William Ask, Thomas Mowitt and Charlotte Con roy, both of this cily." The ab ve marriage was consummated in this city on last Tuesday week some years ago; and thereby hangs a tale of the marvellous. Mr. Mowitt is a respectable shoemaker, who keep-' several men employed, and among the rest w as John Pelsing, who had ingratiated himself so much in his favor by his faithfulness, industry and sobriety, that he took him in partnership about three years since, and had no cause to regret his kindness. From that time Mr. Mowitt and Mr. Pelsing were constant friends and companions, and boarded in (he same house, until about twelve months ago, when one day they were subpoenaed on a Coroner's jury to be helu over the bi dy of a man that had been taken out of the river at the foot of Maiden Lane. The deceased had all the appearance of hav ing been a regular dock loafer, and it was the opln. ion of all present that he had fallen into the slip while in a state of intoxication, but the verdict, which was presently given, was merely "Found drowned." The jury being dismissed, Mr. Mowitt turned round to look for his friend and fellow-juror, who had been at his side till. that moment; but he was gone, and he thought he saw him running at full speed up Maiden Lane. This stiuck him as being curious, and also reminded him of another curious fact at least curious as connected with his sudden flight namely, that when Mr. Pelsing first glanced at the face of the corpse, he started and turned deadly pale. Mr. Mowitt then proceeded to his boarding-house, and thence to the store, to look for his partner; but he had not been to either, nor did he return; and nothing could be heard of or from him. Mr. Mowitt gave up all further inqui. ries, thinking there must be some mysterious con nection between Mr. Pelsing and the man that was found drowned; and that in consequence thereof, Mr. Pelsing had in all probability made way with himself. So matters rested till a certain day last summer, ' when a lady called on Mr Mowitt, at his store, and asked lor M r. Pelsing. She was told the particulars of this story. "And has he not been here since?" she inquired. "Not since," was the reply, "j know he has," returned the lady. "He has not, I assure you ; at least not to my knowledge," replied Mr. Mowitt. "But, I am positive!" said the lady What proof have you ol ii?" inquired Mr. .MV." "The best in the world," returned the lady;"for I am here, and Mr. Pelsing and myself are one and ' and the same person!" And strange as it my seem, such wasthe fact. . v- - The question then was, whether Mr. Pelsing was : a gcntlemau or a lady; and it' turned out that she was a lady, and that her name waa Charlotte Con-
