Obituary
Of Lucious Mertrem Murphy, son
of Allen and Catharine Murphy, was
born May 11, 1887 and died June 9,
1900, aged 13 yea is and 2S days.
Merlrem was a dutiful son, and
was loved py all He leaves to
mourn, father, mother and one sister
one brother preceded him to the Spir
it land.
The funeral was held at Zion U.
B. church after which the remains
were layed to rest in the Scutch

Dear Sir: We arrived in Wash
ington City safe and sound June 26
about noon. Failed to find Gen.
Grosvenor is be bad gone borne but
went up and called on President
McKinley who received us very
cordially and gave us a hearty band
shake. We visited all the principle
pnblic buildings, walked up to the
top ot Washington! Monument and
went ont to Mt. Vernon and took a
drink ont of Washington's well.
We did not see any land that com
pares to our Hocking Itottom land
but there is plenty of wheat in Md.
and tbe D. C. We walked np in
the dome of the Capitol and was in
the President's room and sat upon
the President's chair and stood in
the place where Bryan will stand

Wn came over to Philadelphia
Thursday and we, visited variou
various places of interest and took a
trip out 1 1 miles to Chestnut Hill
Park, which is the finest park we
ever saw. We visited various other
places today and must say the Penn,

we ever saw. We were down and
took a peep at tbe boat this morning
on which we sail tomorrow at 12 M.
We were shown our room by the
Steward, who showed us that it was
the finest room on board the boat
and advised us that we were tbe
highest class passengers on board.
We are now enjoying ourselves and
eating three meals a day but the
Steward says tbey furnish four meals
a day on the boat. We don't know
if we can stand it or not, but Car
penter is preparing for it. He only
drank a quart ot sea water tbe morn
ing when wm were at the warf.
It is dreadful hot in the city and
we are now enjoying ourselves in
Fairmount Park.

Chicago has extended a most cor
dial welcome to General Joseph
Wheeler as the new commander of
the department of the lakes. Tbe

other in the warmth and eloquence
of their greetings. The Inter Ocean
is graphic in its picture of "tbe little
old ex-Confed's" appearance at tbe
army rendezvous in Tampa during
the war with Spain.
"Dewey's guns had just thundered

thrilled the nation with victoio's rap
ture," says tbe editorial writer, "when,
to the army gathering at Tampa, ap
peared a wisp of an old man in an

Wheeler is retired from the army in
September he will leave a record of
which any warrior may well feel
