THE JOURNAL. IDITID 1X0 TXmSKBXO BT , -At 81 00 in advance; 9t 00 at the end o the year. GALLIPOLIS. tHTTBSDAT, - APRIL fit, 1854. District Court. The annual sea tion of this Court for this county, com menced on Saturday morning last and adjourned on Monday. Judges pre sent, Thurtnan, of the Supreme Court, and Peck, ft ash and Whitman of the Common Pleas. The number of cases ready for trial were few, as most of them had either been settled or continued. There were no jury trials. The following 'cases were the only ones disposed of: P. (Join's adm'r vs. A. Morri Chancery. Decree for the defendant J. Graham's heirs vs. Jas. Preston-- ejectment. Non suit. Win. S. Ward ts. McDaniel eject went. Plaintiff submitted to non-suit. D. H. Gates and John Goodno vs. The State of Ohio Error from Com mon Pleas. It involves important ques tions of practice in criminal matters be fore the Probate Court, and was re served for decision by the Supreme 'Court at Columbus. Chas. 'Clendinen vs. R. Re served for decision by the Supreme Court at Columbus. Th Iboktosiaks. The great topic of interest among our neighbors down the river is the repeal of the Ohio Iron and Coal Company. The committee in the Senate to whom the subject was re ferred have -reported unanimously in favor of repeal. We deubt whether the Legislature will pass a repealing act, but leave the question whether the com pany has forfeited Its charter to the Courts of law. We should say that to be the proper way. The Register in its defence of the company bas bad occa sion to say severe things of R. Lxzt, Esri.. the main mover in the repeal - L "movement Leet notifies the Register editor that he must retract or stand fire ' in a libil suit the editor says he wont, and so the matter stands. Public Squabs Suit Gained. In the case of Wm. H. Lahglet vs. The .Town or Gallipolis, which was an nounced some time since as having been decided against fencing the square, ap pears to have been an -error, either eom jnitted by the law-reporter or the tele graph operator submitting the decisions to the Cincinnati press. We were led into the error by copying from a Cincin nati paper, the only report ever received here. Judge Thpbman gave a new pfease to the subject on Saturday last, by announcing that it was decided in favor of the Corporation. So we have the right to fence and -ornament the Pub lic Square, and we think the sooner it is done the better. Had we a big gun we would give this decision "one grand salute." . 3TOn Monday nigbt, says the ; Cin cinnati 'Commercial, a singular "-robbery ef a grocery-store was perpetrated on Everett street, between Cutter and Linn. The rogues drove a large wagon to the door, gained entrance' by 'false leys, and Asides getting 02'5 in cash, Actually took the time to load .their ve hicle.-down with the -bulky articles of etc., etc. - TS&ick. It is stated that the experi sment .of -using coal for the purpose of turning brick, has been successfully tried m Maryland. Each ton of coal will burn Jour thousand brick, with two fcands to tend the furnaces. jtLying in bed with the head high, the Medical Journal says, is unhealthy. In all 'diseases attended with fever, the bead -should be pretty nearly on a level with the body, and people ought to ac custom themselves to sleep thus to avoid danger. A Eagle Captured. A large gray eagle was shot on Saturday last, three miles south-east of Maysiiek, Ky. The Jiohle bird is three feet -high, measures seven feet two inches from tip to tip of wing, and bis talons, when extended or opened, were eight inches across - it i i . " 1 JtWe have but time to call atten tion to :mv advertisements collectively this!, week. ,They shall receive proper jjotice next week, '"'--. s'-j. - jtSTThe time for the payment of the two per cent by the stockholders of the Gallipolis, Jackson and ChiHicothe rail road, has nearly expired, and as yet but few have answered to the call. Gentle men, come forward and answer this call, the road never can be built if you are so backward in the payment of so small an amount. Let every stockholder put his shoulder to the great improvement, and it will be but a short time ere the Iron horse wiH snort through our conn Our Market. The Gallipolis meat market is poorly supplied at present, notwithstanding there is choice Balti more Beef Cattle at all times just across the river. We bate two" butchers en' gaged in the business, one brings pork the other lean beef to market, and it beiner 'necessary to have a mixture of lean and fat, to render a dish palatable, they work most admirably into each other's hand. Price for beef six eents per pound for jCraf cut just back of the ears with a gradual increase in price to the tail owing mainly to Who's the purchaser. The butchers say. they can't afford to pay eight cents for .Bal timore beef and sell at six. Reckon not. Four pounds of neck for a quar ter go it, knife and cleaver. A Swindle. Some $15,000 in bills, purporting to be of the Metropolitan Bank, at Washington City, have lately got into circulation about Green Bay, Wis. There is no such bank in existence. Ice Mouhtaiks. The ship John Bright, which arrived at New York on the 20th, reports seeing on the banks, two icebergs two miles long, and three hundred feet high. XS The New York Senate has re passed the liquor bill, vetoed by the Governor, with a clause, submitting it to the people for ratification. It will now probably re-pass the House also. "Owing to a press of news, several articles have been crowded out this week, among them a glance at Tom Pep per ot the Jackson standard. I bey shall appear next week. 3T HsmaKo k Cadot have a prime article oi srouna couee. w e nave inea it and can speak from a knowledge. Fish Stolen. On Friday night last, Wm. C. Miller left four half barrels of shad in front of his store, on Court street, relying upon the honesty of the community, but what was his surprise next morning to find one come up mis sing, some thieving scamp having lifted it during the night. While we are noticing thieving, we will take occasion to put our citizens on their guard against chicken thieves, as there appears to be a regularly organized band of operators in this line, at present infesting this community. Ford & Drouillard "cut a big cheese" the 'other day, and submitted a large slice to our judgment. Well, it is good and no mistake, if you don't be lieve it, "pitch in" and taste for yourself JCSTGeorge J. Payne, of Porter, has received his Spring and Summer Goods, which he intends to sell cheap. Look at his card. .iSTThe obituary notice of Abraham S. Grimes, shall appear next week. Marine Disasters. A despatch re ceived at the Philadelphia Ledger office from Long Beach, states that the ship Powhattan came ashore on baturday, near Egg Harbor light. She bad 2UO emigrants on board, none of which were saved. Thirty-three bodies have been washed ashore at Long Beach. Not a vestige of the wreck is left. The schooner Manhattan was also wrecked near this place. AH on board perished save one sailor, who is in such a condition as to be unable to give any particulars. Sao Accident. Capt. John Lod- wick, of the steamboat Hamburg, came near losing bis -life -yesterday morning, while returning from a visit to his boat, which is now undergoing repairs at the dry dock in Fulton. He was walking leisurely along on the track of the rail way reading a letter, and when observed by the engineer of the mail tram, which was coming down from (Jolombus, was notified of his danger by the steam whistle, but either did not hear it or stepping aside got directly in the way of the locomotive, which knocked him down and passed over him, followed by the tender and front wheels of the baggage ear.
