Mr. George Pence's residence, smoke -house and (spring house, sit- -nat ed five miles west of nillsboro, on the Danville pike, were entirely consumed by fire this morning, Mon day, May 15, about half past 10 o'clock. It is not known how the fire originated, as there was no per son at home, the family being away planting corn at one ol liis son There was nothing saved axcept the contents of the smoke-house. The first to see the fire was David Wilkin's daughter, who gave the alarm. The family of Mr. Pence are destitute of clothes except what they had on at the time. Loss $1500 to 2000, on which there is a small in surance. I went out to see the ruins and learned the above particulars. It was sad to see Mr. Pence and wife sittinj in the barn, the only shelter to protect them from a shower of rain that was just falling. The aged couple have passed their three-score years, and always have been first to sympathizi with the distressed. The farmers are in the midst of corn planting, and are progressing finely, notwithstanding the ground is very rough and cloddy, and re quires much labor to put it in good order for planting. A much larger acreage is being planted to corn in this vicinity than last year. Wheat and grass are looking well but a good shower of rain now and then, with- warm sunshinp, would help them out amazingly. Oats, also, need some warm rains to give them a fine start. Mr. S. E. The County Commissioners have granted us two new pikes to run through and near our town, one on tbe one mile and the other on the two mile system. Mr. Osborn, of whom we spoke in a former letter, has fiinally embarked in the business of selling "tangle-leg and its concomitants to the unwary customers, in his new building erect ed this Spring. We predict that he is only setting a trap for his own downfall, for our community is too much in favor of temperance to tol erate such a busiuess in our midst. We had thought him too honorable a gentlemen to have embarked in such business, but alas! it is too true Wo hope our citizens will be vigil ant, and that he will learn ere it is too late, that there are other callings more respectable and lucrative in our community, than selling liquors.
