This thing of debt is so little understood, and so injurious in its effects, that I re quest you to give it a place in your pa perr, How to go in debt is an art that most persons learn from bitter experience. In all departments of labor it is an art easily taught, but not so easily reduced to practical operation. The rule tar be laid down is, that debt should never be I contracted for what we consume. A tan- ; - - - J t 1l J J 1 V. 1 V, for his labor does not consume them, but gives an additional value to them; the shoemaker may buy the leather on credit, for his labor, too adds, to its value, but when the wearer of the shoes buys them on credit, then neither the shoemaker, nor tanner, nor seller of hides has any valuable security for the debt. The wearer of the shoes has destroyed it. So a farmer may buy land on credit, be cause his labor on it adds to its value; ho may purchase growing stock on credit, because his grass crop is improving it. But when he goes to the store and buys merchandise on credit, which he con sumes, relying upon uncertain crops, and unstable prices to pay the merchant, then he endangers his own security, and that of the various classes of merchants who are depending on each other. Cap ital, to be useful, must be employed; and as the laboT of most of us is our only capital, our wants demand its employ ment. If a debt created gives us that upon which we may profitably expend our labor, debt is a blessing; but when it fetters the employment of our labor, it is a curse. Hearts. Hearts are of several kinds and of widely different natures. First, there are walled up hearts, and those are of two kinds; about one kind the wall is high and strong, and to surmount it is a work of extreme difficulty , but if you get inside you have entered Eden. Fra grant, and sweet, and fair as the visions seen in dreams, is that inclosed garden; and it is worth hard labor to gain admis sion there. The other has a wall as high and strong, and full as hard to get over; and when at last, with torn flesh and dislocated joints, you have scaled it, you wish you hadu't, for there is noth ing inside but rocks and cold water. The trouble with these two descriptions of heart is that 'tis impossible to distin guish the one from the other until you have almost worn yourself out in climb ing the walks. Another kind of heart is that which, having nothing to fence it in, lies open to the passage of all men and cattle a waste unfruitful field, of no use to anybody, and less to its owner. But there is another kind of heart a rare creation, but a real one whose wall is low and almost hid by flow.ers. The birds make their nests in it, and sing as they swing upon the swaying twigs and festooning vine3. Beyond the wall, itself a thing of fragrance, beauty and joy, lies the enchanting gardens. De lightful bowers invite the way-worn trav eler to enter and repose; spirits . of love and beauty beckon the sad and lonely ones to the feast of souls; and a charmed light and glory hover in the whole joy ous air. A. Fact. An editor speaking of the bad litera ture of the present day, says: You may read many of the eastern weeklies for a year and scarcely find a fact which will make you wiser or better all fiction, romance, lies, velvet feathers, little fiends equipped in smiles and crinolines, big scoundrels in epauletts; with a moustache,. turning the hearts of sim pering maidens: the every-day history of life ingeniously belied and generally outstretched and yet always ends beau tifully. Hundreds of persons who think they can't afford to take their home pa per, in the course of a year spend three times the amount in trash. Notoi. And so saying, Spoodleix gathered up his coat-tail in a halloo of fine-cut glory and stalked forth. tAn invincible wit and punster asked the captain of a craft, loaded with boards, how he managed to get dinner on the passage. .
