PRAYERS I DON'T LIKE. I don't like to hoar him pray, Who loans at twenty-five per cent.; For then I think the borrower may Be pressed to pay for food and rent; And in that Book we all should heed, Which says the lender shall be blest, As sure as I have eyes to read, It does not say, "Take interest.'' I do not like to heir him pray, On bcDded knees, about an hour, For grace to spend aright the day, Who knows his neighbor lias no flour. I'd rather see him go to mil, Aud buy the luckless brother bread, Aud see his children eat their fill, And laugh beneath their humble (lied. I do not like to hear him pray, 'Let blessings on the widow be," Who never seeks, her home to say, "If want o'ertake you, come to me." I bate the prayer so long and loud, That's offered for the orphan's weal, Ay, him who sees him crushed by wrong, And only with his lips doth feci. I do not like to hear her pray With jeweled limbs aud silken dress, Whose washerwoman toils all day, And then is asked to "work for less." Such pious shaver I despise! With folded hands aud face demure They Jirt to heaven their "angel eyes," Then steal the earnings of the poor, I do not like such soulless prayers; If wrong, I hope to be forgiven; No angel's wing tbem upward bears, They're lost a million miles from Heaven! A Farmer's Experience with a Reaper Agent. "A few years ago" Le said, "a farmer who lived near me, and who, hoino Allt nf ,l..t.t roc jr. road to prosperity, had, in the early summer tue promise 01 a magma cent crop of wheat. Some weeks before it was time to cut it, an agent came along one day, selling im proved reapers. "A beautiful croi of wheat you've got there," he re marked to the farmer. The latter reckoned 'twould turn out pretty well "Mow you ought to have a good reaper to cut it with," said the agent. "Can t afford it; haven't got the money, replied the farmer. "1 m selling a lirst-class machine better than any that have been used about here and I can tnve you one at a bargain and wait until it has paid for itself. 1 tlou't want any money now," 'continued the agent, temptingly, and with pencil and pajier He showed hrst how much the tanner would have to pay for Butting his crop that year, how much grain he could cut for other people, autl, in short, that before he would have to pay for the machine he would have saved and earned enough with it to pay for it, and still have Lite machine not half worn out. To make a long story short, the fanner was persuaded to purchase the reap er, and gave an "iron-clad note for it that is, a note accompanied with a statement of property, which in this State is equivalent to a mort gage." "The machine arrived in due time; it worked well and my neighbor was aole to cut his crop hiinsclt instead of hiring a reaper. Then he did omc wonv wim it tor ouier people buta38everalothers in the ECiSu- Doruoou nau also purchased ma chines he did not "go out" with it as much ss he expected. At length his note matured but he had no money with which to pay. He had had sickness in his family and had not got as much for his crop as he had expected. The agent was sorry and, after a (rood deal of hesitation "supposed" that if the farmer could not pay, the time would have to be extended, but in that case he should have to charge 20 per cent interest! He would much rather ,have the money than that even. So the note was renewed on those terms. The farmer paid the interest once or tWlPP. lint finolli- 00 tlio n,,oetl,'H day came around, he saw that he was not likely to have mc ney to nay even that. There was nothing then left for him to do but to mortage his place, borrow the money and pay the note. And still he ran behind hand, so that instead of reducing the mortgage he was obliged to in crease it from time to time until in land and begin again. Now, do you suppose mat tUat man thinks tO-Uay that he was ruined by a reaper? No, on, ue lays it 10 SICKneSS in HIS I lautuv, ouu crops, smaii prices, rau- road extortions. t.hP trif Bnt hi first debt was for the reaper." . - m nil HV U'W I WE Will I. 2d in llieir tounu piT a A Danbury man's order for his wile s hat is a novelty in its wav.
