GERMANS NOW TAKING TO DIET OF MUSHROOMS (Correspondence of Associated Press.) Hamburg, July 9.—A« an auxiliary food supply, of which little advantage Is taken, mushrooms are being urged upon German epicures, and especially upon Catholics, as substituted for meat on fast days. Dr. Von Langemann, a Dresden physician, estimates that there are over 200 kinds of mushrooms In Ger many. At least, one-quarter of these are not only edible but nourishing and tasty, while only seven can be classed as poisonous toadstools. The annual crop. If it all were har vested, would run into the millions of marks in value, he believes, and would supply hundreds of tons of food. Al ready the inhabitant* of villages in the vicinity of forests have learned to sup ply themselves with a valuable food that costs nothing but the gathering. CITY PLANNERS TO ASSIST THE STATE Will Co-operate Wherever Pouible in Development of Capitol Park Zone Pending the final landscape treat ment of the CapUol Park extension zone, the City Planning Commission will doubtless co-operate with th» State authorities in making such tan turtive plans as will assure the best pos sible treatment of that important dis trict. Governor Brumbaugh is under stood to be deeply interested in the working out of a dignified landscape design and it is probable distinguished landscape architects will be invited to study the problem and submit sugges tions. It is not unlikely that Seventh street, which now stops abruptly at North street, will be extended through the Capitol Park area to Walnut street. This arrangement would contemplat® a broad subway under the Pennsyl vania Railroad tracks at State street. It is also quite probable that both North and Walnut streets from Third street to the railroad will be extended to a width of at least eighty feet. As yet no real plan has been evolved, but as soon as possible a decision upon tha final treatment will be reached. Little Old Gravestone in the Path of New Driveway On the slope of the old "Potter's Field" that overlooks what will event ually be the new extension of the Cameron parkway drive, is a single little gravestone—very grny and cracked with the rains and snows of many and many a winter. The in scription is blurred. Who lies beneath it, what story ia buried in the lonesome grave, only the years could tell. And thev're past. It's the only stone that will neces. sarily have to be removed at the city's expense should the park department take over the 35-foot strip of ground that skirts the old almshouse burying ground to complete the Cameron parkway chain. The city, it is under, stood, will have to pay for the removal of any of the bodies that might be exposed by the excavations to the present burial ground of the unknown dead beyond the sanitary hospital. This has served ever since the old "Potter's Field" was abandoned more than ten yenrs ago. As soon as this strip is obtained the city can go ahead and advertise for the construction of the new drtvewav from Cameron's to the Reservoir. Bids will likely bo opened in a few weeks so that the work can be started before Fall. Doctor Won't Let Thaw's Wife Go on Witness Stand Malone. N. Y., July 9.—Evelyn Nes bit Thaw remained abed to-day on advice of her physician, Dr. McGib bon, of Chateaugay Lake. It was re garded as unlikely that he would sanction her going to New York to testify in the jury proceedings to de termine the mental state of her hus band, Harry K. Thaw. Representatives of the attorney gen eral, who arrived here yesterday with a body attachment for her, remained at Chateaugay. New York, July 9.—Mr. Cook began Ills questioning to-day by asking Thaw whether he believed himself to have been insane at the time he killed Stanford White. "That," paid the witness, "is a question that cannot be answered by one word. The question came up and the jury gave me the benefit of the doubt. In effect they evidently be lieved there might have been a chance that my reason was not all that it should be." In testifying Thaw spoke very quietly.
