W. L. BEASLEY 2028 FIRST AVEMB Mala 558 Dedication Noted for the Early History Which It Revived Held Monday Bristol, Tenn., October 6.—(Special.)—A courthouse dedication, noted for the earl/ history which it revived, was held at Jonesboro, Washington county. Tenn., the site of the capital'of the early state of Franklin, today, when the people of thivt county commemorated the comple tion of a handsome new structure, which cost 146,000. This building was erected on the site of the first rude courthouse to be established west of the Alleghaney mountains in lids country. Prominent among the men who journeyed to Jonesboro and made ad dresses today were: Judge II. H. Inger soll of Knoxville; Judge John Allison of Nashville, Judge H. Tyler Cafenpbell, Judge Hal II. Haynes and Judge A. J. Tyler of Bristol; Judge 8. C. Williams of the state supreme court, and Alfred A. Taylor, a brother- of the late Senator Bob Taylor of Tennessee. Some of the speak ers reviewed the more notable historic events connected with the early history of Jonesboro, which was the center of in terest in the region in the days when the'heroes of King’s mountain assembled at‘’Sycamore Shoals for the march across the Blue Ridge. The original courthouse at Jonesboro was erected in 17S4, and today there was read before the assembled throng the order providing for the erection of that rude hewn log building, with chimney of sticks and mortar. This order, found among the old records, rent.j: “The court recommends that there be a courthouse built in the following man ner, to-wit: 24 feet square, diamond cor ners and hewed down after the same is built up, 9 feet high between two floors, and the body of the house 4 feet high above tiie upper floor, each floor to be j neatly laid with plank. The roof to be •»( joint shingles, neatly hung on with pegr. a justices' bench, a lawyers' and a clerk’s! bar, a sheriff's box to 1st in.” There is nothing on record to show' that i this building was planned by an architect, j and no trace of a bond issue to build this ' house could be found, but a bit later on | in the records was found the following 1 order relative to payment for the “temple j of justice:” “The court orders that Col’o RoWrson ' be allowed £fty pounds current money for 1 the * building of the courthouse in tint Tow’n of Jones Borough.” Special Rates Via fC Montgomery, Ain., and Return . . . .$S,-0 Tickets on sale October 29 and GO.
