Stories of Its Fabulous Wealth Continue to Lure Searching Parties A story of a lost gold mine rivalling Imaginative productions was related by Archdeacon Whittaker. the Anglican pioneer missionary, who lias labored for 10 years among the Eskimos in the vicln- ^ ity of the Arctic ocean, and who has left I Edmonton for his headquarter* at Fort j MacPherson, in company with Bishop '* j Eucas and a number of missionaries, af j ter a well-earned vaction in the east and j j In the old laitd, says an Edmonton, Al- * berta, special to the New York World. The gold mine is supposed to be located > between Fort MacPherson and Ilarschell i Island. According to Archdeacon Whit- j taker, tradition says tiiat a great number j of years ago a party of mine men, of ! them an old C. P. R. surveyor, found the gold mine, which was stated to be of fabulous value, among the mountains in the vicinity. They made elaborate geo graphical notes so that they would he able to find it again, and then returned < with tiie object of making the necessary ! arrangements to work the mine. On the way out. each of them heavily ) laden with the precious metal, provisions ] ran short and seven of the party died. The two survivors organized another | party, but the geographical calculations had been lost In the mean time and all Attempts to locate the mine ended in fail- £ ure J For the past 12 or 13 years, said Arch deacon Whittaker, party after party has * attempted to reach the supposed treas ure. “Two years ago." he states, “I was go- j ing down the Porcupine, on my way to r! Dawson, and I met half a dozen men I with a little steam launch and a big sup ply of food. By way of a joke I said to them, 'are you looking for the lost mine?' f] and I laughed, not expecting that tnal ^r.s what they were really after “As I afterward found out, that was exactly the quest they were engaged in. <\ They claimed to have the exact latitude ] and longitude of the lost mine, and had a surveyor with them, and seemed al together sure that they would be suc cessful. But if they found the gold no body has ever heard of it.” Archdeacon Whittaker said that a man named McRae, a mining engineer in \ Mexico, gave up a good job and started out with a sextant and compass to look for the treasure on the strength of inside information he claimed wras in his pos- ’ ession. McRae found indications which led liimi to believe he was on the right track, and he came back and secured financial back- | ing to the extent of $12,000. He bought an jj elaborate outfit, Including a motor launch, and went again with four men, but the ! expedition met the same fate of the rest. ^ Two of tne men are still living In thf j vicinity.
