A T: i ik -■ SOME HELPING HAND HINTS FOR THE HOME BY MAHJON HARLAN* v nilia nan neaas “I never have seen a*reclpe for making hina ball beads In the Corner, so 1 de cided to send onq that I have used and [hid It all light. The beads have been much admired. I should like to get di rections for making beads from rose pet v*». I have a quantity of roses, which are ?oing to waste, and 1 wish to utilize them. L have used several of the recipes in your Corner and found them excellent. I am making a cook book of them. This is the formula for china ball beads: One and Dne-half cups of china balls—not too dry. Put into water enough to cover them. A tomato can will answer. Boil two hours, rinse and wash well In several waters until all trash and skins are removed. Cover thorn with boiling water, after re turning them to the can, and dissolve a teaspoon of patent dye or one tablet of faster egg dye in half a cup of boiling water. Then acid the balls In the can and bml half an hour. Take out and wash in several waters, until they will not stain tho hands. Dry thoroughly and pour over them a few drops of sweet oil; rub in well and let them dry again. Heat a hatpin or sl.aip instrument and run through each, then string them. MRS. M. J. E.“ As I have had to tell other inquirers for the formula for making rose heads, we cannot afford space for a repetition of what has appeared at least a dozen times in our Coiner. However, the address of i correspond*nt who makes them has been sent to you. 1: is always a pleasure to bo told we have been of help to readers. It is an added pleasure to learn you 11 nd our icopes worthy of a place in your home n ado cook book. 1 ought to be ashamed to confess I have no idea what china bends are. I take it for granted they are a vegetable production. Will not you tell me where they grow and what they are like? Would Adopt a Little Girl ‘May 1 inquire through your Corner if any one knows of a girl between the age of 1 and 6 years who could be adopted? I could give her a good home. We have no little ones. 1 sent a letter to you f^i Mrs. IT. H. C., in answer to her offer of t.ochet and cross stitch patterns and offered more postage if what I inclosed was not enough. L have had no answer from her in any way. MRS. R. M. F." The Inquiry with regard to the little girl is passed on with the hope you may get her and have all the happiness in the ielation your kindness deserves. The crochet patterns were given away some time ago. That is probably the reason you had to reply to your request. The owner was doubtless weary with returning the same answer to a number of corre spondents. I ask now that any one who can supply the patterns you need will write for your address. I hold it for thut purpose. Squirrels a Nuisance “Months ago 1 wrote tot you, askeing that you kindly inquire through the Corner how squirrels could be kept from taking unripe nuts from a black walnut tree. You re plied. stating that the request would lie printed, but as yet I have seen nothing of It. 1 presume the inquiry lias been over looked, and T am merely writing to recall it to you, as I feel sure there Is some one who can help me to do away with the nuisance and not destroy the squirrels with poison, which I am tempted to do. “MRS. M.“ Had you inclosed your address In this letter you would have heard promptly by mall that your Inquiry was answered in full and sent to press weeks ago. It has, I suppose, been crowded out by a press of other matter. I advised you to make war upon the little thieves. It is in keeping with their disposition and be havior to steal and carry off unripe nuts which are of no earthly use to them. They rob bird's nests without mercy, suck the eggs and kill the callow’ nestlings. They are impudent and cruel, and a nuisance generally. Let the gunner In your family kill a few and frighten the rest away. They will soon learn what the sight of the gun means. For years T tried to domes ticate red squirrels In my woods by the exercise of kindness. We built houses for them in the trees, fed them winter and summer and protected them from their natural enemies—cats and crows. They repaid us by driving away song birds, rifling the nests of all feathered things, gnawing holes in barn lofts and cottage attics, and in other ways that forced us to declare a w*ar of extermination. .»e lleve there is no other method of dealing with them, if one would enjoy country life and surround oneself with peaceable pets. • _ Recipe for Bran Bread “A member asks for a bran broad recipe. Here Is a Rood one that a physician gave. I do -wish that every sufferer from consti pation might know what relief It affords One quart of wheat bran, two cups of flour, one cup of molasses, two cups of sour milk (sweet mill, may be used), one teaspoon of salt, one teaspoon of sat eratus. Hake one hour and a half. "A. T." We have had so many Inquiries for bran bread recipes of late that we are especially grateful for yours. I trust It will be kept more safely than those which pre ceded It have been. Getting Rid of Roaches •T have an unpleasant topic to discuss— cockroaches! They are as olmoxtops as spiders to mo and equally Insistent about living under my roof. I bottled two of their eggs (more properly nests) of the large black variety, and hatched 20 husky little 'beauties.1 and one of the small kind hatched 23. These hatched In three days after 1 took them front their mother. They lie dormant sll winter when outside, under rooks or rotten planks, etc. In the house, they are not likely to emerge until the lights are out. M,v practice Is to keep the Infested rooms dark for about an hour before bedtime, then, lighting up suddenly, I surprise DO per cent of them Into stand ing still, when they may he approached within a few Inches. I use a thin, sort • > WUUU JIHUUIC. m UJT IU U1UIC9, WUH « IIIVII * give them a light stroke when on the walls. After they fall to the floor a ‘coup do grace’ effect may be administered. 1 use a broom when they are higher than the walls. They may be killed without crushing and then swept up. I have killed from 30 to 6<> of them in this way in a night. Another way is to make a trap (several are better) out of bright tin pails with garbage In them—banana skins, po tato peelings, etc. Use one or two quart pails, coffee cans, etc. Place against a rough wall up which they will climb and drop in. but they cannot get out. Gar bage with a smell is preferred. They also like bran. I>o not uso deep pails, as they see the trap. MRS. G. E. F.” You have numerous companions in the discomfort wrought by the ‘'unpleasant” marauders, but you seem to have been tor mented to an unusual degree. May I ask If you have ever tried setting saucers of molasses and tartar emetic in their haunts, and strewing n mixture of borax and rod pepper in corners and cracks? Add these defenses to those you have de scribed and I think you will speedily be freed from the plague. They are loath some creatures. Coloring a Tan Straw “Will some benevolent milliner tell me if 1 can color a tan colored straw' hat black with the common dyes used to color cotton, etc ? T wish to take apart a nice straw and sew It to a buckram frame. Ought 1 to dampen the straw before sew ing? Can black and white straw be col ored brown by any of the dyes, or even a brown varnish stain? Gan some one tell me how to fix horseradish so that it will keep for a few weeks? ANNA K.“ We have milliners and benevolent onei among our active members. 1 turn over your queries to them. T can answer one question from my own scanty knowl edge of dyes. You cannot color black straw' or black anything else brown. 1 have had no difficulty in keeping horse radish for weeks after grinding it Wher mixed with plenty of sharp vinegar tf cover it. It has kept good until used tip Of course it was corked, except when it use, and kept in a cool, dark place.
